Progressive jpg files problem with VS 11+ installed on Vista

Post by jdwarren »

I have tried this on Windows XP and Vista. The jpg files were created by Photoshop and are viewable on both operating systems (Vista & XP) with just about any other program that can display a jpg file.

1) VideoStudio 11+ will show these jpg image files correctly in thumbnails and timeline on both XP and Vsita.

2) VideoStudio 11+ installed on XP will show these jpg image files correctly in the Edit preview and will encode them correctly (Share)

3) VideoStudio 11+ installed on Vista will show these jpg image files as a totally black in the Edit preview and will not encode them correctly when they are included in the timeline (Share)

The Encoding mode (displayed under properties) for these jpg image files is "Progressive"

Other jpg image files with the "Base line" Encoding mode work fine regardless if VideoStudio 11+ is running on XP or Vista

Does anyone know how to get Progressive jpgs to work correctly on Vista or is this merely a VideoStudio bug that is associated only with Vista?

Welcome to the forums,

Progressive encoded JPEG files can cause problems when trying to use them in some NLEs like VS. The reason is that they are not encoded as one complete frame, but rather using a series of progressive scans. I think they're best used for web display.

So I would recommend using the standard jpegs, and not progressive jpegs.

You might also want to note that the name of the program is Video Studio, not Visual Studio which is a completely different, non-video related program from Microsoft!

Sorry about typing "Visual Studio" instead of "VideoStudio" in my post.!!

I actually use "Visual Studio" at work for some programming tasks and it must have been hard-wired into my brain!

I am new to using VideoStudio but think it will be very useful for some projects I am currently working on.

Anyway this post was meant for VideoStudio 11 Plus. Although I will admit that progressive jpg files can cause trouble it was just curious as to why the exact same version of VS11+ deals with it OK on XP but not on Vista...

Ken - Maybe this minor operating system issue gets mentioned to your VS software developers to see if they can reproduce the Vista "progressive jpg" problem on VS11+ and to find a fix for some future VideoStudio update?

If your Vista machine is a laptop with Intel graphics chips, you may want to do a search on that subject.

Yeah ... had to use that money I was paid for my last paper on nuclear disarmament somewhere...!!! 8)

jdwarren -- sorry about the 'in' joke. But none of us here work for Ulead or Corel. This forum is staffed by users like you who volunteer their time to help out. I just happen to be one of many. As far as we are aware, no Corel employee logs on to this forum ... at least with any regularity.

Ken - No problem! And I do enjoy the humor!! I will slant my comments and questions a little differently now.

I have already spent a little time using the forum's search engine and have learned a lot. No doubt you will be seeing me around as I continue to learn! Who knows maybe someday I might even be able to assist someone else!
Best Regards,
John

OK. Problem solved!

If the Windows Vista ICON that starts VideoStudio is set to run the program as Administrator then everything works perfectly.

Anyone can do this by right clicking on ICON, clicking on properties, and then under the compatibility tab checking "Run this program as administrator". There also is a button just below this (Show settings for all users) where you can that also check "Run this program as administrator". Also under the shortcut tab, click on advanced button and then checking "Run this program as administrator" just to be sure!
