How do I import a plug-in? ADS analog capture useless so far

Post by eggwheat »

Hi, I have just bought the ADS DVDXpress capture unit to hopefully transfer some VHS tapes to DVD format. It came bundled with Movie Factory 3 SE and this works fine with the ADS unit.The point is I already have Movie Factory 4 and Video Studio 8 and 9 but these can't see the ADS unit as there is no plug-in for it installed. How do I get the ADS capture plugin thats in MF3 into MF4 and VS9 so I can use those programs instead?

Cheers, Phil..

System:
Windows XP SP2

This should work for Video Studio 8

First copy these two files from C:\Program Files\Ulead Systems\Ulead DVD MovieFactory 3 to C:\Program Files\Ulead Systems\Ulead VideoStudio 8.0 to the programs directories of VS8, VS9 and MF4.

ADSCirrusUSB2.dll
ADSCirrusUSB2RC.dll
EDIT You may only have the first file and not the second one.

Next Open HerCap.ini Using Notepad located in C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Ulead Systems\Ulead VideoStudio\8.0. (It's in a hidden folder so you have to tell Windows explore to display it.

The contestents of HerCap.ini need to be as follows

[CAPTURE_PLUGIN]
CurrentPlugin=0
CurrentDriver=0
DriverName=
CapturePluginPath1=VfwUleadMpegCap.dll
CapturePluginPath2=DswUleadMpegCap.dll
CapturePluginPath3=HotPlug.dll
CapturePluginPath4=SonyMVCap.dll
CapturePluginPath5=WMFCap.dll
CapturePluginPath6=ADSCirrusUSB2.dll
DefaultPlugin=ADSCirrusUSB2.dll

[CAPTURE_SETTING]
ForceToUsePreviewMode=1
DisablePreviewAudioForDV=0
[Version]
ProfileVersion=1

The process should be similar for VS9

For Movie Factory if you look at DVDMFCap.ini located in C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Ulead Systems\Ulead DVD MovieFactory\3.0 You will see that the contents look something like this

[CAPTURE_PLUGIN]
CapturePluginPath1=VfwUleadMpegCap.dll
CapturePluginPath2=dswUleadMpegCap.dll
CapturePluginPath3=SonyMVCap.dll
DefaultPlugin=
CurrentPlugin=2
CurrentDriver=0
CapturePluginPath4=ADSCirrusUSB2.dll
DriverName=ADS Instant DVD USB2

[CAPTURE_SETTING]
ShowCaptureInfo=1
AutoDropBitRate=1

Ok Ive just tried your suggestions. This is what now happens: I click capture, it now sees the ADS unit, as ADS appears in the source window and its now listed as a plug in but as soon as you click anything on the screen the program crashes. Same for both VS8 annd 9.

I tried it on MF4 too but it seems to have no effect at all. I.e. it's the same as it was before I changed things.

Btw I have both ADSCirrusUSB2.dll ADSCirrusUSB2RC.dll files in my MF3 so i copied and pasted them both.

Any further suggestions?

Thanks, Phil.

Also this must mean the VS9/MF4 manuals lie, you can't use an analog capture card with their software, as there's no plug-in for it. You can only use the bundled software that came with your card. Correct?

You can use any analog capture device that implements the DirectShow / WDM capture driver model.

The hardware vendor is responsible for providing such a driver if they want their hardware to work with UVS or any other program that uses standard video capture interfaces.

Phil,
VS9 recognized my ADS Instant DVD2 analog capture device immediately, with no need to insert ADSCirrusUSB2.dll as I had to do with VS8.

Summary

Thof: ADS DVD Xpress obviously doesn't implement it then. My mistake for buying it :(

Well after much messing around and emailing. I cannot get VS8 VS9 or MF4 to work with it. MF3 SE that came bundled with it is useless. It crashes after youve captured your video and try to go to the edit screen. So that means the only thing that works with it is CapWiz 3.5 that came with it too, very basic..but I guess I can import the captured files into VS9.

Even then you only have to have one dodgy frame on the video and it'll stop capturing or previewing, also you cant cue up any video points as forwarding or rewinding or anything other than play will make the preview window hang.

Very amatuerish all in all..and highly unrecommended!

Anyone have any suggestion what to get instead??

I'll throw this ADS box in the skip..

Hi,

For pro-level work, Avid w/Mojo is very good and affordable solution.

On the otherhand, VS has been very good for me, too, and is only a fraction of the cost.

If you have a USB device for video, it is probable that the hardware maker will have an update to VS, or even a simple workaround.

Good luck.

CapWiz...

Well, like you said, you can always use CapWiz to make your captures, and then import those into any Editing and/or Authoring software you want.

Capwiz has a nice clean interface, and is pretty straight forward for making your mpeg captures.

At least give the unit a chance. Make a capture, and then burn it to DVD without modifying the captured video.

When your source has a "blip" in it, that will throw many capture devices into a tailspin (not just the DVD Xpress). You could eliminate the problem if you put a TBC between your video source and the DVD Xpress.
