Basic functional problem: How to export an edited file???

Post by jfreijser »

I have used VS 11.5 several times in the past hoping to have a better or more professional tool than ms movie maker, but find I have to revert to moviemaker for capturing videos from my video camera, and now I find I simply cannot find a way to save a wmv file after editing it.
I have worked on VS projects before, cutting and clipping etc, then exported the result.
In the current case all I have done is import a wmv, increased the brightness, and find I cannot export or save it. Where is the export function gone? I remember seeing an "Export file" button appear in the middle right hand side of the screen, but I cannot make it appear this time.
This is driving me crazy, and making me feel very stupid, as I cannot find any issues about this basic point in the forum either.
Please help,
thanks

Welcome to the forum!!

But I am not sure what you mean by export? The only export command of which I am aware, after editing, is 'Export to mobile cam' (using the Share command).

If you have captured a .wmv (why that format -- almost impossible to edit and save properly...), and are trying to save it, then after editing you use the Share command, and then choose what exactly you are proposing to do with it. If you are wanting to creating a DVD compatible mpeg-2, for instance, you choose Share > Create Video File > DVD.

But I repeat, why did you capture to wmv format in the first place? It is meant for streaming video on the web or other internet display; not serious video editing. What is your camera model and make? How does it connect to your computer? What is your computer? What system is it running? You have provided almost no useful information that anyone can work on...!!!

If your camera is a mini DV camera, then you should be using Firewire to capture in DV/AVI format which is the best and easiest to use. If you have a DVD or hard drive camera, then you capture in DVD compatible mpeg-2. Either way, you capture in either DV or mpeg-2 format, edit in that format, and then at the end of editing you convert your project into a DVD compatible mpeg-2 file: Share > Create Video File > DVD.

But you haven't even told us what you are wanting to do with your final file once 'exported'! Do you want to create a DVD? Do you want to send it to friends on the web? Do you want to post it on YouTube???

Use the Share tab , then select Create Video File, then from the choices select WMV.
