New Installation of VideoStudio 10 Plus hangs on opening

Post by Die Dose »

I purchased this program as a download/update to VS9, and have used it with no problems under XP SP2 since January of 2007. Last weekend, being unable to get rid of trojan-generated pop-ups, I decided to reformat the hard drive and reinstall my software. My first step was to install XP, Norton Antivirus, update Norton, then update Windows. I then installed MS Money, A DAB radio card and software, Dragon NaturallySpeaking Preferred 7, Epson Stylus D88 printer software, Creative Audigy soundcard software, Visioneer 8700 USB scanner software, and Nero. All these programs had been on the PC prior to the reformat. I then installed VideoStudio by copying the files vs10_plus_e.exe and vs10_contentpack_e.exe from the CDs created last year onto the Desktop. and installed from there, running vs10_plus_e.exe first. No errors were reported during installation. When I started the program I clicked on "VideoStudio Editor" in the splash screen and the editor loaded behind the Ulead screen, but then the program hung. I uninstalled manually as per instructions which I had printed from the Ulead site last year, and re-installed following the above procedure. The result was the same. I checked the Event Viewer, which showed three errors: MsiInstaller, Category none, Event 11706. Product SmartSound QuickTracks plugin. No valid source could be found for product SmartSound QuickTracks plugin. The Windows Installer cannot continue. This error appeared twice - presumably once for each of the exe files which I had run. The final error was Application Hung, Category (101), Event 1002. Hanging Application vstudio.exe. Nevertheless the plugin was listed in Add/Remove programs (ver 3.0.2.7 7.10 MB). I removed it from there, removed VS10 manually, and reinstalled from the CDs. The program hung as before, but this time there were no errors listed by Event Manager. CPU usage, in Task Manager, by vstudio.exe was 99%.
Apologies for the long-winded description.
Any suggestions as to how I might get this program working again will be extremely welcome. I have found it to be a pleasure to use, and to now has given no trouble.

SmartSound/Installer issues

Post by Die Dose »

Gentlemen,

Many thanks for your prompt replies, and the welcome to the board. It is a pleasure to see so many helpful replies on so many different issues, with no insults! I had found the link to the SmartSound site before posting, but when my last installation went without error reports in Event Manager, and the plugin was correctly listed in Add/Remove Programs, I presumed that the plugin was not the cause, and having no more leads, I sent the post. I have downloaded the files from the SmartSound site and printed both sets of instructions, and I will have a go this evening (or in about 12 hours, for those in far-away Kansas). I have also read your post warning not to use the latest version of the plugin.
My sincere thanks again.

Further Attempt to Install VideoStudio 10Plus

Post by Die Dose »

I have carefully worked my way through the two links which you kindly provided. I could find nothing wrong with the setup of Windows Installer, and to the best of my knowledge I have the latest version. I followed the instructions given on the SmartSound site, removing the current plug-in (3.0.2.7) and installing the current update (3.0.9.0). I know this has a problem, but it is the only alternative available to use. I hoped to use it to get the program running, then replace it with a fully-functioning version at a later date. The program still hangs at the same point. There are no installation problems listed in Event Manager.
I am too busy to spend more time on this issue. I will monitor the forum in the time being, then have another go some time in the future. I am reluctant to spend money upgrading to ver 11 until I know what is wrong with 10. For all I know, 11 may not install either, if there is an issue on my PC.
Thanks again for your help.

At this point I'd be reluctant to upgrade to VS11 anyway, since we're probably getting close to VS12 appearing...

VS10+ Installation/starting problems

Post by Die Dose »

Thanks for pointing that out, it's an angle which I hadn't considered. They are bringing out versions faster than I can install them!
I have also e-mailed the Corel/Ulead support team. If I get any useful advice I will add it to this thread.

A solution at last

Post by Die Dose »

Since my last post I have been unable to spend any time on this problem - the joys of being a self-employed single parent. However, last night I had another go. I then found that Windows Media Player, DivX Player and Nero ShowTime did not work, either. Although it is only a few weeks since I reformatted and reinstalled XP, I cleaned a lot of garbage from the Registry using CCleaner. I downloaded the latest drivers/software for the XFX/nVidia graphics card, uninstalled the current drivers via Add/Remove Programs, uninstalled the card in Device Manager, then reinstalled using the latest software. Everything now works perfectly! I suspect that the problem was associated with a graphics card file which was corrupted during the first installation. Reinstalling the drivers supplied with the card would have proved this point, but I decided to kill two birds with one stone and upgrade the graphics software at the same time.
I thought that if I added this solution to this post it just might help someone in the future with a similar problem. But do follow best practice, and backup (including Registry) first.
