Diffrences between PI and Photoshop

Post by Luna Esterhuizen »

I've used PI for since PI 4 and have just bought PI 12 (we do not have X3 in SA yet and I wanted the boxed version!).

Recently I tried Photoshop CS2, but to my surprise 99% of it can be done with Photo Impact.

What's the main difference between this two, especially if you look at the large price difference. :D

I don't know because I've never tried CS2. If you have why are you posing this question on this forum? Have you posed a similar one on Adobe's forums?

I don't think it is in good taste to do so..;)

I'm so sorry I did not see it in that way, but I had to supply my artwork for a DVD inlay in a "PDF press ready format" and they said I had to use Pshop. From their the question.

If you need something to be saved in PDF format then you could create it in PhotoImpact and then use one of the many FREE PDF Creator programs that are available.

Hmm. I regret that I do not know anything about 'Press Ready PDF' for us dummies, but am aware that there may be more to it than just running a jpeg through Pdf995. Here is the top link that Google popped out.

http://www.agl-mag.com/CREATING_PRESS-READY_PDFs.pdf

• Font licensing can be a problem if the Service Bureau is run by an old timer working with Adobe Distiller 4.0 and a dusty Macintosh computer who insists on embedded Adobe Open type fonts. Be sure to ask if Windows XP TrueType fonts, other than Times, Courier, and a couple of others are acceptable.

•Lossy jpegs will no doubt be unacceptable also. Find out if the PDF creating utility you use can include non-lossy images in a format suitable to the Service Bureau from PhotoImpact. Ask about RGB vs CMYK.

•Etc, etc . . . Good luck

Followup: With apologies to my favorite freebie application, experienced users above, and for venturing into somewhat unknown territory, it looks like Pdf995 and PI X3 could do the job you need. CMYK is supported, as are resolutions up to 4000 dpi. 2400 dpi (or 2450 dpi) would be a more normal maximum printed resolution for presswork up to 12-13 inches paper size, or so my Windows calculator indicates. Don't forget to download Pdfedit995 if you go this route.

I think the main difference between the two, besides the price, is that PhotoImpact is infinitely easier to use -- the PhotoImpact interface is much more intuitive.

I tried to use the "other program" once, and I was completely overwhelmed by how unnecessarily complicated it was. Some things I wanted to do required several manipulations when I could do exactly the same thing in PI with just a click or two.
