Hi! there,
As a new member to this forum, I am urgently seeking help with editing using Ulead Studio 8. As an elderly pensioner, I am finding this extremely difficult, and have been trying for some time to achieve this.
I have numerous camcorder video's from the past 20 years or so, and would like them transferred onto dvd. However there are several bad clips on each video, which I require deleted, using ulead Studeo 8. In an attempt to make any help more understandable to myself, I will explain how far I can go with the programme, and then some kind person might then point me in the right dirction. I can obviously enter the programme on my computer; I can then go to file and select the video file I have captured onto the programme, by opening it. This puts the original first clip of the video, onto the preview screen. I can then preview the video, by clicking on the project/clip button. After that I cannot get any clips to move into the storyboard by dragging and dropping, no matter what I try.
Underneath the preview window are the arrows, for marking in or out,
project/clip button, home, previous, next, end, repeat, and system volume control. I have tried, WITHOUT SUCCESS, to use these buttons in a way I think they might work. Can some decent person please, advise me on how to fulfil my object, by deleting clips, using this software,
and make an old man happy. Many many thanks to all who take the time to reply and help me.
Editing HELP!!!! using Ulead Video Studio 8.

Welcome to the forums,
When you're inserting your video clip, are you clicking on the folder icon in the Video Library? Using the File Menu, have you tried using the File>Insert Media File to Timeline>Insert Video..? The latter should insert the video file directly to the storyboard/timeline.
When dragging and dropping you need to ensure that you're dropping it on either the main video track or the overlay track. VS will not allow dropping video/image clips on the title track. It is possible to drop a video clip on one of the audio tracks though.
I'm going to post a couple of links to some articles, tutorials, and material that should help you get a good understanding of not only how to use VS, but video editing and DVD authoring.
You might want to read through From Camcorder to DVD tutorial.
A Recommended Workflow has been developed to help guide you through the mine-field of video editing, as it pertains to Ulead's VideoStudio Programs. They can be viewed here:

To better understand Field Orders, and Frame Based, please read the following article:
Explanation of Field Orders
For a brief summary of AVI and MPEG-2 please read the article at this link:

To locate a Manual for your version please click on the following link:

Lastly was your VS8 included with some type of hardware? If so it is known as an "SE" version, which are watered down "freebie" versions, that may have been tweaked by the hardware manufacturer to work with their hardware.

Many thanks for all your help, vidoman. I will peruse your video help sites with interest, in the hope of overcoming my problems.
Incidentally, the Ulead Video Studio 8 I am using was included in the video capture device which I purchased. Is there any possible way to tell if it is a genuine full version, or not. Many thanks again.

Since it was included with your capture card, it is an SE version. To confirm this click on the
located in the upper right of the Menu bar, then select About Ulead VideoStudio. In the window that opens, look at the Version number. On the end of the version it should have SE.
FYI, the current release is VS11/11+, and is soon (possibly by the end of this month) to be replaced by VS12. VS8 is considered a phased-out version. It did have numerous bugs, and patches. However for SE or Trial versions, the patches can not be installed.

Yesy I did what you suggested vidoman, and it does not mention SE anywhere. It says it is Ulead Video Studio 8.01.000 and gives the serial number, but does not mention SE.
I don't know whether it is my age, (I was born in the 1930's) but I am finding this editing lark extremely difficult, and have spent the last couple of months, using different programmes, trying to edit my video's. All I want to do, is cut some very poor shots, out of my video's, to make them look not too bad. Anyway, many, many thanks for your help, it was very good of you to spare me the time.

The software that comes free with a camcorder, camera, scanner etc is rather like the "Free Software" that gets bundled with a new computer.
Often these are business deals between various companies to promote each others stuff.
The software is normally out of date stuff. The software companies know that many people like to have "The latest and the best" so by giving away an older version they work on the principle that those new "customers" will fork out the price of the upgrade.
Some hardware manufacturers rather than giving a way out of date item will give a more up to date item but with restricted abilities and term it a SE (Special Edition) version. We on the Web Board prefer to call them a "stripped Down Version) as they have been in some way crippled.
When I recently purchased a Toshiba Laptop I discovered after getting it home that it included a copy of DVD MovieFactory 5 (Movie Factor 6 is the current version). I was excited at the fact that more people were 'joining our family' even though I knew this was a "SE" version.
However excitement turned to horror when I later found out that the particular version supplied and specially tweaked by Toshiba did not support the JPG format. Most if not all digital cameras now sold will take pitures in JPG format. I now began to think of all those disappointed users who will be turning to our forum for assistance relating to the making of a simple slide show.

I will assume you have already captured your videos onto your hard drive.

Now instead of your time line looking like this

it looks like this

To get rid of the bit you wanted to delete, select its thumbnail (in this example the middle one) then press [Delete] on your keyboard.

You have now learned how to cut a piece of video out, also how to add a cross fade transition. The forum suggestion is that when you have finished editing your video that you then create a new video from it.
Click the share tab.

Select PAL DVD or if your in an NTSC Region select NTSC DVD
and then save the video.
You can then start a new empty project and go to the Share tab and select create disc,

Now follow the procedure in this link:

May I take this opportunity to convey my appreciation to sjj1805 for his excellent assistance in this matter. I have printed out all the tutorial, and will endeavour to achieve my objective of editing my video's.
I am so grateful that someone took the time to explain this matter to me, in an easy to understand manner.
Once again sjj1805, many many thanks, you are a proper gentleman.
