Unspecified error in VideoStudio 11plus

Post by Anne »

I have been successfully using ULEAD 11plus for over a year. Since last month I am unable to copy projects to DVD. Everything goes smoothly until it is about to write to the DVD, then 'unspecified error' comes up. I am totally miserable. I need this to work to send a DVD to the exam board!

Can you burn with any other programs, such as Roxio or Nero? If so, you may have installed packet writing software (i.e. InCD), which "takes over" your DVD writer. You would have to disable or remove that software.

If you can't burn with another app it could very well be that your burner has died.

I notice you say 'copy projects to DVD'. This suggests to me you are trying to edit a project and then jump straight to burning a DVD, without first converting the project to DVD-compatible mpeg-2. This is our recommended workflow, even though the method I think you are following works for some. But it doesn't work for everyone, so that is why we recommend first converting the project to mpeg-2 (Share > Create Video File > DVD and NOT Share > Create Disc > DVD). It is less demanding of computer resources to separate out the steps.

Note also that after you produce your new mpeg-2, you go to File > New Project. Don't worry about giving your new project a name. The objective is just to clear the timeline of your current project.

Once that is done, you select Share > Create Disc > DVD. The burning module will open. Use the Add Media button at the top to insert your new mpeg-2 in the burning timeline. Then go to the middle of the three icons in the bottom left of the burning screen. There is a little box beside the words 'Do not convert compliant mpeg files'. Make sure that box is ticked (it usually is by default). That way, your already compliant mpeg file will not be re-encoded. Then build your menus and burn.

Many thanks for the suggestions. I have checked that there are no programmes installed which might take over the DVD writer. I also followed Ken's instuctions to the letter but up came the same error.

I have also had the same problem using my school computer so I know that it is not a dead DVD burner.

Any further thoughts would be very gratefully received.

If the project is urgent, a work-around would be to produce the DVD-compliant mpeg-2 as outlined above (you don't say whether you in fact succeeded in producing one). Then use a third party software program to burn it to DVD. The Nero and Roxio Easy Media Creator suites, for instance, will do that and give you a good choice of menus as well.

And if the burning process doesn't work with them, at least you (and we) will also know there is something else the matter other than Video Studio... and vice versa!!
