Subject: Firewire Capture-Ulead 11.5 Plus
Hello SJJ1805.
I was recommended to contact you by Simone ( Corel Support Corel UK Ltd ).
Having recently purchased a Ulead Video Studio 11.5 plus, I was expecting to continue the same capturing process as before. That is - from the DVD outlet on my Sony camcorder TRV19E via a Pyro 1394 Port into my HP Notebook. It registered sound and picture perfectly BUT the capturing process did not work and kept cutting out.
So, in accordance with the Ulead 11 manual, I have just purchased the following:-
1. IEEE 1395 cable 6P Plug/4P Plug 1.8 M ( which has a DV to Firewire facility )
2. Newlink IEEE 1394 Firewire 2 Ports Cardbus compatible with Sony and many other DV Camcorders for digital video creating/editing. It complies with IEEE 1394 High Performance Serial Bus. Supports plug and play specification.
Hot Plug allows user to connect/disconnect devices without powering down the system.
QUESTION:
Although I have purchased the above, I have not yet broken the packaging ( and so can return it and get a refund ). Are the above two items suitable for Ulead 11.5 plus capturing
operation ?
Kindly advise
Thank you
Regards
Ken Barnes
Reply:
Yes,
IEEE1394 is the forums recommended method of transferring Video between your Sony camcorder TRV19E and your notebook computer for use with
VideoStudio 11.5 Plus.

Subject: Re: Firewire Capture-Ulead 11.5 Plus
Dear Mr. Jones,
Thank you for your swift reply of yesterday, but I am still encountering a problem.
Wheras my original Pyro 1394 Port did deliver both vision and sound to my notebook but did not capture effectively ( it captured but kept cutting out ), my NEW LINK 1EEE Firewire does not deliver either picture or sound. Instead it gives me the following message
"Either no video capture driver is installed or no device is connected."
It's strange that old card will produce both sound and vision and the new one doesn't work at all. What should my next move be ? Kindly advise.
Regards
Ken Barnes

The first thing that you need to check is that the IEEE1394 card has been inserted in your notebaook computer correctly and identified by the machine. If you right click on "My Computer" on your desktop and select "Manage" you will then see "Device Manager"
Check "Device Manager" to ensure that the computer has recognised the IEEE1394 card, if not then it has possibly not been inserted correctly.
If it is identified then check the cable and the plugs to majke sure they are not damaged.
With the camcorder turned OFF and the cable connecting the camcorder to the computer, start VideoStudio. Goto the Capture Tab and then turn the camcorder on in playback mode. A message should now appear on the computer stating that a new device has been detected and do you want to use it.

There was a hiccup when VS11 first appeared. Corel had changed the capture plug-in and for some reason, the new one could not "see" any device that was capturing from an analogue source via firewire. That included:
(1) mini DV and Digital 8 cameras being used as a pass-through device i.e. connecting an analogue camera or VCR via S-Video/RCA cables to the digital camera's AV socket, with the analogue signal being converted in the digital camera to DV and transmitted to the computer via the firewire connection;
(2) External capture devices such as the Pyro range which are connected to the computer via firewire and capture in DV format from an analogue source; and
(3) a Digital 8 camera actually playing back an analogue 8mm or Hi8 tape for transmission in DV format via firewire to the computer.
The 6 November 2007 patch issued by Corel resolved the first situation but not situation (3). As for (2), it apparently did not cover all types of external firewire capture devices, as we are getting increasing numbers of users with such devices who are finding that the update patch makes no difference.
So first you have to apply that 6 November patch, to see if it corrects the problem. But if it does not, then I am afraid there is little that you can do about it regarding capture with VS11/11.5+.
However, the good news is that you can still use other programs, such as the excellent small freeware program WinDV (www.windv.mourek.cz) which is designed only to capture in DV format, and which continues to work with your device. Then when you capture your DV, you can easily open it in VS11/11.5+ for editing and authoring.

Capture problems with IEEE1394 Firewire
My thanks to Ron P., Ken Berry and Steve Jones for your advice and technical guidance. Because I'm busy this week, I will not be able to apply your advice fully until next Friday - after which I will report on the results.
