Unable to "Create Disc"

Post by pdibarto »

I am running VS11 11.5.0157.2 Plus. (This application has previously worked.) The first problem I had was the inability to "Create a Video File" from a project that I had spent quite some time on. The file creation attempt would just immediately freeze the Video Studio application and I would have to kill vstudio.exe in Task Manager. This option worked on smaller projects so I suspected the project itself. However, I found I was unable to burn via "Create Disc" with even small projects. Looking for a application conflict I attemtped to disable some stuff through MSCONFIG...big mistake; my OS was corrupted when I attempted to restore.

Long story short...fresh install of WinXP Pro with all the patches and a fresh install of VS11 11.5.0157.2 Plus. I am still unable to "Create a Video File" from my current project and I am unable to "Creat Disc" from anything.

I load a project or video file and select the "Share" tab...
I select "Create Disc" -> DVD...
On the "Add Media" page I select NEXT...
On the "Choose Template" page I select NEXT...
And that's where it ends. No matter what path I choose I can never get to the Burning Page. The application is still working and the NEXT button responds but it doesn't move me to the next page. I am baffled.

Any help?

It has become almost a mantra with me over the past couple of months to suggest people first go to the Microsoft DirectX website and download the latest update patch. The current one is dated March 2008 and can be found at http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/deta ... laylang=en
Note that it updates both DirectX 9.0c (XP) and 10 (Vista). The number of your DirectX installation will not change, but the patch gives extra functionality in a number of areas and corrects other faults in VS11 in particular which do appear linked to Windows updates, particularly within the burning engine. Note that updates of DirectX have to be done by the user as they are not part of the regular (automatic) Windows updates.

The only other thing I can think of is to wonder whether you have installed a program which takes over your burner drive -- though I doubt that this is your problem since you are also having difficulty just creating a video file as well. Anyway, the main culprit is Nero's InCD which is a program which takes over the burner as it is a drag and drop cumulative burning program. However, you have to consciously install it these days, and you can remove it individually, rather than the whole Nero suite in case you did install it.

The Roxio Easy Media Creator suite has a similar feature called "Drag to Disc." If you have the Roxio suite, check the system tray at the bottom of the screen and there may be an icon that allows you to disable it when you want to use another program for burning. Also you may have to check for it as a start up item to prevent it always taking control of the burner on start up. Use msconfig in the Run box to do that.

After I tried the above and it failed it struck me that this has really been my first attempt at using VS 11+. I upgraded from Video Studio 9 at the beginning of the year and this is really the first project I have worked on. The last thing I burned was from VS 9.

As far as installing a program that would take over my drive or conflict in some other way, if you read over my original post again you can see that I tried to get around that by using ¡§msconfig¡¨ unsuccessfully. After that I did a fresh install of WinXP Pro and brought it up to date via patches. The only programs I installed at that point were: Logitech Mouse drivers, ATI x1300 video drivers, MB sound and lan drivers, ULead 11.5 Plus, Adobe Reader 8, Microsoft Office Enterprise 2007 and AVG 7.5 Internet Security. After ULead still failed I installed Nero6¡Kstill no luck with ULead. Today I uninstalled InCD and updated DirectX with no further success.

So, at this point I¡¦m back to thinking that I¡¦ve never actually seen VS 11.5+ work correctly and wondering what my options are now.

In addition, I've just discovered that upon opening up ¡§Ulead VCD/DVD Disc Image Recorder¡¨ neither of my Sony DVD drives show up there. Any further thoughts?

When you say you did a fresh install of XP can I clarify if
1. You reformatted the hard drive and installed XP
or
2. You installed XP on top of the existing XP.

If you did option 2 then it is possible that whatever corrupted the original installation has been carried over to the new one.

I installed WinXP Pro to a new folder. I would call that a fresh install.

Since all this I have uninstalled VS11+ and re-installed VS9. I can see my 2 Sony DVD burners from VS 9 and I burned a small project. I then installed VS11 (just the main file UVS11Plus_E.EXE). I did not install any of the other packs. I loaded the project I had built but was still unable to save it to a file without an immediate freeze of the application. I restarted and attempted to burn the project directly to disc without making a video file. I got to the burn screen but at 3% the application froze up forcing me to reboot to gain access to the disc drive.

My next step is to attempt to burn the original 4GB captured mpg file that was the basis of my edited project.

Erm..... Yes and No.

I have never installed a second copy of an operating system to the same partition because when you go to do so, the Windows Installer warns you that Microsoft advises against doing this. Not only must you take into account the Windows folder - normally [c:\windows]
but also the program files folder [c:\program files] also the documents folder [c:\Documents and Settings]

If you are going to install a second copy of an operating system on your computer you should do so to a separate hard drive or partition. It is possible that your two installations are conflicting with each other.

I would have to disagree since I've done it before with no problems. The only problem I see right now is with VS11 and that existed before the re-install. Additionally, when Windows installs to a new folder it creates a new registry so that it no longer sees the programs in the Program Files folder and it creates a new user in Documents & Settings so it no longer knows anything about the original user(s). All programs that require registration with Windows have to be reinstalled. That's my take.

Don't take my word for it please view the following:

Link one by a MVP
Link 2
Link 3 (This one is from Microsoft)
You have to install each operating system on a separate volume of your computer so that each installation can retain its own files and configuration information.
Of course by not following this advice you are not having any problems.... are you?

I think I'm going to close the book on this one. I was able to burn the original captured 4GB mpg file to disc through the re-installed version of VS11+. I'm going to posit that my original install was somehow corrupted and therefore the project I created was also somehow corrupted. I will have to re-do the project.

Thanks for all the help.
