Capture VHS to DVD problem

Post by jetsitter »

I'm using a Hauppauge WINTV PVR PCI II TV card to capture my VHS video. When I capture the video it gives a black vertical section on the right side of the capture. Also there is a small width vertical line on the right side. The sound & video are good other wise. Can anybody tell me why? Thanks!

Welcome to the forums,

Does this line appear outside the Title Safe area? If so, it should not be visible on a TV.

I used the Hauppauge WinTV PVR 350 PCI card when converting some 300-500 VHS tapes a few years ago. Some my own, some for friends and family.
The majority converted OK but some had problems - including that which you describe. The problem is the VHS tapes themselves are worn. You have a few options available.
  1. If it is simply near the edge(s) of the video then as Vidoman has mentioned it will fall in the TV overscan area and will not be seen on most TV sets and thus be ignored.
  2. If it appears on the TV screen then you can use either:
    1. the crop filter or
    2. The Distort Clip function.
  3. Try cleaning the VHS Tape players head with a head cleaner
  4. Fast forward / Rewind the VHS tape several times before playing
  5. Adjust the VHS Players tracking
