Burning avi movie to disk green lines through it

Post by Glen »

Hello i am new to this forum i hope you can help .
I have two computers a desktop dell 8200 and a laptop dell 6400
as describe below.
The problem i am having is on some rar files i extract them using winrar to create the avi file
Ulead dvd movie factory 6 accepts the file .I do not edit any portion of it i go directly to burn the file either on a single layer disk in hq or in gq dos not seem to matter.or on a double layer disk .I preview my movie everything looks good .When disk is finished i play the movie in my dvd player and i have green lines running through it .This only happens on a couple of avi files the majority of the files are okay .I tried this on both computers with the same result.I playback the dvd on either computer and the green lines show up also .They lines were not there when i previewed the movie .

thank you Glen

Welcome to the forums,

AVI is just a carrier or container file, that may contain a wide variety of formats. RAW uncompressed it yields a whopping 65 gig per hour of video. Next is the DV, which is slightly compressed, is the most recommended for editing, and has a file size of 13 gig per hour of video.

The "avi" container will also hold the highly compressed digital formats of Xvid, DivX and MPEG4. I'm suspecting at this point that your "avi" files are among these. These formats were developed for distribution and viewing over the internet and on PCs, not for editing purposes.

Without knowing what your actual video file is, it is difficult to provide any accurate solution. So with a video clip in the time line, right-click on it, and select Media Clip Properties, and please post them back here..

Are you creating a Standard DVD or a DivX DVD? If the latter, I would recommend using DivX's own authoring program; http://www.divx.com/divx/windows/author/.

Now looking at the quote, notice the part highlighted in red. The frame size of 448 x 352 does not meet DVD specs. For NTSC the frame size should be 720 x 480, for PAL it should be 756 x 480. So MovieFactory will have to create the additional pixels required to fill the difference between frame sizes. In this case the quality will be of such that I certainly would not want to view it, and it probably why you're having all those green lines.

Next the frame rate is certainly bizarre, and not within DVD specs. For NTSC the frame rate must be 29.97, and for PAL 25 fps. The frame rate for your video clip is 23.976. So again MovieFactory must create either an additional 4fps for NTSC or 1.024 for PAL. This also will affect the outcome.

When I say that DMF must create additional pixels or frames, it has nothing but assumptions to create from. Those additional items do not exist in your video clip, so essentially it must create them from nothing..

You can always just burn the video file to a DVD or CD, and play them on a PC. The method used would be to create a Data DVD, not a Video DVD.

You just can't make a silk purse from a sows ear...:(

The file properties are that of film.
You have helped me in understanding what the problem is.
I have found what i believe is a good program (movavi video converter 6)
this program takes almost any format and converts it to the format you need.Using this program i can take the avi format

File format Microsoft AVI files-Open dml
files size 175,570 kb
frame rate 23,976 frames/sec
duration 2563.397 seconds
data rate 66.99 kbps

video
Compression DivX® 5.1.1 Codec
Attributes 24 bits,448*352
Total frames 61,460 frame(s)

And convert it into an mpeg 2 format suitable for ntsc
this progranm does it really fast .And then i use the ulead program to burn to a dvd .Thanks for your help in understanding the basics of video.I consider this problem resolved with great success thanks agian
