  OK Ron ! It's my lack of lateral thinking !!

The Firewire card fits into a spare PCI slot , the Firewire cable fits into the 6-pin port in the Firewire card , the lead then trails out of some hole in the casing of the PC tower(which is closed by this time) and the 4-pin end of the cable fits into your camcorder !

There was I thinking of another Firewire socket fitted into the case of the PC tower

OK , I've taken up too much of everybodys time with this one ! Thanks for your patience !

Don't worry we were all asking questions like this at one stage, we're just lucky enough to have moved a little further along the learning trial now. I suspect you could bamboozle us with things that you do in your job

:D :D :D I have just got my PC back from the doctors !!

It now has a brandnew Firewire card , an additional 160GB HDD (this has been designated the C: drive) and the old 120GB has been designated the E: drive which I will use for Video Editing only.

The 'doctor' has cleaned it up and removed a number of viruses that had crept in there and guess what ???????????? ....... everything is hunky dory !! :P :P An initial 7 minute trial video capture into WinDV gave ZERO dropped frames ; pre-clean-up was giving about 1500 dropped frames !

Thanks to all for their help and patience ; I have said it before but I will say it again , it really is of big comfort to have such a knowledgeable , vibrant forum such as this !! :D :D

yippee, good news and thanks for letting us know.

Is Windows on the 160gb drive?
If so, then yes, use the 120gb for all your video editing.

I'd have been inclined to have windows on the smaller drive though and the bigger one for video editing.

Graham

Yes , Windows is on the 160GB drive. The 'doctor' believed that it was better to have the systems and programs on the newer , healthier drive.

The 120 GB is plenty big enough for my applications !

True for windows, may as well hedge your bets that way.

120gb = less than 10 hurs of dv video!!!!

Once you have the bug, now you're away, you'll wonder how come you fill 1TB
