Another capture problem !

Sorry ! I meant to add that on the original spec. of my PC , two items that may throw some meaning to most you about my Firewire connection are

1. NVIDIA nForce2 motherboard with dual channel DDR , USB2.0 & Firewire

2. Radeon 9600 256Mb VGA/DVI-1/TV-out

1. This is the motherboard, and you have on-board firewire.
2. This is the graphics card and doesn't have firewire.

And on-board Firewire is normally a good thing. But that doesn't mean that they might not sometimes fail. Anyway, continue trying to test with a new cable. And ultimately, if you still have a spare PCI slot on your motherboard, then you could always install a new firewire card if worst comes to worst.

No end in sight to my problem !

I tried a new Firewire cable today and it made no difference at all ; I got hundreds of frames dropped when using Win DV. I even tried changing the setting from Type 1 files to Type 2 files - admittedly , I was grasping at straws !

I am still trying to find a decent PC repair place in the Swansea area whose shoulder I can go and cry on.

It sounds like your firewire card is on the fritz. I wouldn't bother saying anything to the PC dealers about video capture and editing. Just tell them to swap out the firewire card!

Yes ! I found your two articles useful and have put the 'Rundll32' etc., as a shortcut on my desktop.
I want to find out about the availability of the software 'Enditall' as well. Thanks for your help!

Black Lab mentioned about swopping out the Firewire card. As I see it , the Firewire is part of the motherboard. Is it possible to install a separate firewire card and connection or would you need to substitute another replica motherboard with its on-board firewire connection ? .... you can see that I have not much idea about these hardware things !

But maybe there is light at the end of the tunnel !

Thanks for your links ! Wow ! The tutorial is impressive and I have printed off a copy.
Regarding the 'EnditAll' website , what is meant by the 'Mirrors' in Mirror#1 to Mirror#6 ? I would download Zipfile as in Mirror#1 in the absence of any other information. Would that be OK?

Hi Terry,
The "mirrors" you mention are just different locations where the software you want to download is located. Generally a site uses a few so if you use #1 and the downlaod is too slow or stops then use #2 and so on.

Thanks for that information. There are spare PCI slots but there is only one Firewire socket and that links to the motherboard. How would you provide another firewire socket ?

Put a pci firewire card into the spare pci slot.
Forget the motherboard fierwire port.

the pci slot transfres all the info as to what the device is etc. and windows supplies drivers, so it will auto install when you turn the pc on.

You plug it into the hole that's in the PCI card. The PCI card should have a 6-pin port, where the port for your camcorder is probably a 4-pin, which is smaller.
