Have you by any chance inadvertently set the display for a 16:9 project (for example on the initial splash screen) but are using 4:9 video; or vice versa?

Hi

Make sure your project properties are not 16:9

Another Capture problem

Post by terry dennis »

Thanks , guys ! That was the problem.

But my problems go on and on !!

VS11 still insists on missing out the 1st 20seconds of the video and then springs into life. I have never had this problem before and wondered what the boffins in Taiwan would think about it ?

So I switched my attention to WinDV only to find that , although it works and responds immediately to the start of the Camcorder playing , there are a chunk of frames dropped. In the first section of the video which is 7minutes long , the captured video is only 6minutes long , having dropped about 1400 frames ! The DV tape plays perfectly well in the Camcorder.

Sorry to be so incessant ! Any more thoughts about the problems ?

Regards

I know you stated earlier in this thread that you are capturing via firewire. Are you sure? Could it be USB, because the symptoms you are experiencing can be cause by that.

If WinDV is dropping frames, you have a hardware problem, not software. WinDV is known for transferring without dropped frames. If you have access to another firewire cable, and/or card (if it is not integrated), I would certainly try them.

I'm not sure this has been mentioned before, and you have already tried this, but make sure you have the absolute minimum resources running when you're trying to capture.

Do you have any other firewire devices running? Even though firewire does far better than USB in governing what device(s) get what resources, how much and when, it could be that maybe an external HDD is interfering.

I disconnected from the internet and knocked off my screensaver before capturing , Ron !

However , I will try another Firewire cable if I can grab one from one of my friends !

Hi Terry

I agree with the findings that you should try replacing your firewire.(including the card.)

Cards and cables are relatively cheap nowadays.
12 pounds should get you sorted including P&P

Hopefully this will cure the problem.

Thanks for that information Trevor , although the thought of replacing a 'card' myself is somwhat daunting ! I've never had the back off a PC !!

Would there be simple step-by-step instructions anywhere ? ............. and maybe a recommendation to one or two suppliers ?........ or is not allowed to give supplier names on a forum such as this ?

Graham

Thanks for all that ! A couple of problems , though !

First , I do not seem to be able to print-out the references that you have attached ! Doing File/Print just gives the first page each time and does not display anything other than the First page.

Second , I would not know what to buy to replace whatever I have got at the moment !

I will probably have to resort to taking the PC to a corner shop !

Thanks anyway

Take a look at the pictures in this link. It is as easy as putting a plug into a wall socket - remember to remove the power lead from the computer first - don't rely on the "off" button.

The way the pages are made, sorry. Try copy and paste into word and print from there.

Take Steve's advice, turn off the pc and then take the cover off. If it scares you, put it back on and take it in, if it doesn't, check if you have a spare pci slot,
http://images.google.co.uk/images?hl=en ... 1&ie=UTF-8

maybe Steve will post his link :) This is important, as it's pointless buying a pci card if you don't have a slot.

It really isn't bad at all inside a machine.

Cough ! Cough ! Splutter ! Splutter ! .... see what you mean about the dust , Ken ! .... but nothing that a bit of very careful hoovering couldn't put right !

From what I saw though , the Firewire connection was not into a PCI connection , rather a fairly large PCB at the bottom of the case ; it couldn't be extracted without taking a hell of a lot of other stuff out first so , sorry , guys , thanks for all your help , but it looks like a job for the experts and not for me ! I will be trying a different Firewire cable over the weekend. :(

I tried a couple of local private PC dealers this morning but was not impressed. Neither of them had much idea about video capture and editing. So I kept quiet while they both went on about software problems until I told them that I had been testing them and that I had it on good authority that the problem was undoubtedly hardware and in particular the Firewire connection !

I will keep you posted on my progress !
