Another capture problem !

Post by terry dennis »

After previous successes , I have just tried to capture some video I took a couple of years ago in New York , without any success. I have a Panasonic NV-GS150 camcorder and am using VideoStudio 11plus.

In the 'Capture' tab , I press the option to 'Capture video' and after a short while , the 'Duration' element is activated (although it doesn't appear to work during capture) ; the Panasonic camcorder is detected ; etc

I then click 'Capture video' and a message appears saying
"When capturing , press the ESC key or click the Capture button again to stop the process. Click OK to start capturing video."
However , capture actually starts BEFORE this message appears. When 'OK' is clicked , capturing stops but the camcorder continues playing ; when 'Cancel' is clicked , capture starts !

However , no matter how I try it , capture fails and I get an error message saying
"The file created is corrupted and unusable. It will be automatically deleted."

HELP !

Hi again Terry..

Look in the Preferences dialog (press F6 on your keyboard), on the Capture tab for Press OK to Capture. If it is checked, uncheck it. Test to see if this corrects the problem. If it is unchecked, check it, and test.

Something is not right with how this is behaving.

How are you capturing, Firewire? Are you capturing to DV Type-1 or Type-2, or MPEG-2?

The error was the one VS threw early on when trying to capture analog video, which I know is not the case here.

In your other post about the text color, I posted a link with instructions on reinstalling. That may be what you need to do..

Thanks for the quick response , Ron !

I will give some answers to your current questions quickly as my wife and I are going away for the weekend as it is her 60th birthday !

I am using Firewire but I don't know if I'm capturing to DV Type-1 or Type-2, or MPEG-2 as the Cogwheel , that Ken drew my attention to some time ago , doesn't disclose any options of that type.

I will explore your current suggestions , and any more that are sent while I am away , when I get back tomorrow.

Continued strength to this Forum as I don't know where the hell we would be without it !!

Hi

First follow Ron¡¦s instructions (Look in the Preferences dialog (press F6 on your keyboard), on the Capture tab for Press OK to Capture. If it is checked, uncheck it. Test to see if this corrects the problem. If it is unchecked, check it, and test.)

Now
After selecting Capture Tab¡XCapture Video
The ¡¥Duration box¡¦ should show 0:00:00:oo

Select DV from the ¡¥Format¡¦ box.

Selecting the ¡¥Options Cogwheel¡¦ should show the DV type option, usually defaults to Type 1
Use DV-Type 1

Pressing Capture Video should start the camera and capture the video to the ¡¥working folder¡¦
The files will be Avi at 13 Gb per hour.

Does that work?

We have an improvement with all the suggestions so far ,
I have now unchecked 'Press OK to Capture'
I have set 'Format to 'DV' and set cogwheel at 'DV Video DV Type 1'

When I press 'Capture Video' , capture is slow to start and misses approx the 1st 17 seconds of the video and the camcorder keeps on playing even when 'Stop Capture' has been pressed ( capture preference 'Stop DV tape when capturing stops' is checked)

Why is capturing delayed by approx. 17 mins at the start of the operation ? This has never happened to me before ?

Capture problem !

Post by terry dennis »

Since yesterday , there appears to have been another problem in that it won't capture even after 17 seconds have elapsed :( :(

As I have told Ron , I am going to investigate the effects of full or partial re-install ......... unless anyone has any better ideas ?

Hi Terry

You could try capturing using WinDV.
This is a free program that captures DV.

http://windv.mourek.cz/

At least it will show that you can capture using your pc, and the problem lies within VS, or not

A capturing problem

Post by terry dennis »

Thanks for that suggestion , Trevor !

I already had WinDV on my PC so I tried it and it worked OK.

I then tried VS yet again and it started capturing after about 25 seconds (it was about 17 seconds yesterday !). The quality was OK but juddered a fraction in one or two places.

I guess that I will have to pursue the VS partial/full re-install ?

I would also inspect the firewire cable and the connections for damage.

Thanks , Steve ; I will do that as well.

Are there any things in particular that one should look for ?

As windv captures ok, I don't suspect a hardware failure.
If it was me, I'd stop wasting time trying to find the problem, I'd capture with windv and edit in VS.
By the time you've found the problem you could have made several movies!!!

I have uninstalled VS11 using Steve J's instructions and then re-installed it.
Unfortunately , I am still in the same position of Capture missing out the first 20 odd seconds of the video ! Any more thoughts about that ?

Also , I find that the 'Preview Window' is reduced in size , or rather , there is a wide black frame around the picture which I didn't have before !!
How can I correct that ? :(

One good thing is that I now have full use of the colour pallettes ! :)

In my own case, there is usually no more than about 2 seconds between pressing the REC button in the capture page of VS and when it starts capturing. I have absolutely no idea why yours might be taking so long. However, the obvious work around -- except for the start of a tape -- is to start your capture 17 -- 20 secs before you actually want the video. Then you can trim off any extra frames that might be captured. Better than losing so much...

As for the black borders in the preview screen, it suggests to me that you are capturing half frame size DV. Have you checked the capture file's properties to see what the frame size is?

Ken

As regards the preview screen , I obviously haven't described it adequately ! ..... EVERYTHING viewed in the Preview Screen has a wide black frame around it ; Library images , library videos , library frames and captured videos ! Library colours ,filters and transitions appear with a deep black frame on top and bottom but exclude the sides!
