Trouble backingup HD for VS9

Post by dazzler »

Hi folks,
I just bought VS9 and an LG model GSA-5163D external multi-format DVD/CD reburner with Nero 6 software, hoping to do some serious editing. I know from posts that there are a lot of Nero users out there, so I wonder if any of you have seen the following problem and solved it.

Instructions say to backup your C: hard drive before installing VS9.

The C: drive backup burn (at 4X on DVD+RW disks) always fails due to errors. I also get the message that C: is in use which may cause problems backing up. Seems to me that C: must always be in use to run Nero on it. What gives here. What causes the errors.

I'm using a pentium 4 with a speed of 1.6 MHZ and with 512 Mb RAM. The reburner can handle DVD+RW disks as well as almost any other kind..

Any ideas?

Don

I'm not sure what you are using to backup your system, but my guess is that there is a conflict between your backup software and Nero's DLA (Drive Letter Access) component (the name of which once again escapes me).

I believe Nero's DLA is called In CD, which I quickly uninstalled due to conflicts with XP sp2.

InCD has issues with SP2?? Like What? Does it effect UVS8 or 9???

Hi,

> Instructions say to backup your C: hard drive before installing VS9.

I don't think they mean the complete operating system but referring to
backing up your data, email, word files etc.

You can't easily backup the operating system because many files are
locked and not accessible.

On my Video Editing box I take the instructions literally and backup the entire system disk/partition. It never hurts to have a copy of your system snapshotted at a place were you "knew" everything was working :-) Especially when installing new software to something like your Video Editting box (I don't worry with my kids games computer for instance).

I use Norton Ghost 2003 to perform my backups - since it reboots the computer into DOS there is no problems with locked files etc. Aother good backup program, of which I have heard good reports, is a shareware utility called Image for Windows (as opposed to True Image for Windows :-)). This one is slightly more complicated to install and setup but I have heard that the program has excellent support - plus you can try before you buy.

So back to the original poster - Don, what did you use to perform the backup? If you are using one of the above programs (or something similar) then you should not get any errors on your C drive during the process - if you do then your system has some very serious problems! If you are not using a program that backups up the entire disk/partition then you are using the wrong tool.

Thanks for your replies to my frustrating problem. I'm using BackItUp, a Nero 6 component application that can be used to back up the entire drive or part of it. Although I have only one physical drive involved here, it is partitioned into C: and D: partitions. Also I'm trying to do a full backup of both C: and D:

My system is a Pentium 4 running at 1.6 mHz with 512 mb of RAM. The operating system is XPPro.

There may well be some problems on my system that were invisible until now, but everything I use appears to work well.

It's interesting that InCD may be a culprit and may need to be removed....though I haven't removed it yet.

The possibility of erroneous drive identification is also interesting. I'll try to look into that.

I downloaded EndItAll which will close all background running programs with one click.

EndItAll claims to run under Microsoft Windows 95, 98, Windows 2000, Windows ME and Windows NT 4.0, but it doesn't mention XP.

Since unseen programs running in the background may be causing my problem, I'm wondering, have any of you have tried EndItAll on your systems using;

(a) XPPro with SP1
(b) XPPro with SP2
(c) XP Home

Does it work ok?

Don,

Sorry mate, haven't used enditall but how about trying Image for Windows? It's shareware and will perform a backup with Windows (whatever version) running i.e. it doesn't reboot the machine into DOS or otherwise take control.

Peter

P.S. Remember to always verify the integrity of your OS backup! Too many times I have seen backups performed without the check - and when they went to restore was when they found something had gone badly wrong with the backup!

Don,
Backing up a drive isn't the same as backing up an operating system
when your in the operating system and running the operating system.
(Which is what your doing).

You need software designed for this such as the previous post
suggested called Norton Ghost. But, don't just buy it and run it.
Norton Ghost doesn't work on all systems. You will need to following all
the directions and do a simulated backup first by booting from the CD.
Ghost can ghost the machine, doesn't work on all systems.
It's a really nice program IF it will work on yours.

There shouldn't be anything wrong with Nero or Incd unless your running
other packet writing software like Roxio.

Don't use those programs that stop background processes unless you
really know what your doing. Some background processes are very
important.

Backup your DATA Only and install VideoStudio.
I would take that other free software off your machine that you downloaded
before you install VideoStudio. The programs may have installed spyware on
your machine like many free programs do.

Hope this helps,

MD
