Microphone problem with Ulead 11.5 plus

Post by gazz »

Version – Video Studio 11.5 plus
Windows Vista
Video type – MPEG-2
RAM - 1 GB
Hard drive space - 15 GB

Message sent to Corel:-

Problem – The microphone does not work when editing a video clip on Ulead. The following error message appears when Record Voice is opened in the Audio section – “Device error. Cannot open the wave-in device”. On a new (blank) project it will record the voice onto the voice track but not over a video clip (my video is a Sony SR 200)

Your urgent attention in trying to resolve this problem would be gratefully appreciated."

The answer I received from Corel was as follows:

"I have been trying to reproduce the problem but nothing. What we need to confirm is, has this happened when you try to record sound to one of the sample videos?

Because this is not a bug on the program I would recommend you use the MSCONFIG command to disable all other running programs and services to see if we can pin point the problem.

Here is a link.
On how to use MSCONFIG on different versions of Windows :

I have modified my MSCONFIG settings but the problem remains.

What I did do was to disable the 5:1 Surround Audio button in the Editing section and the Record Voice function worked over a video clip. However, if it is recorded over a music track the voice quality is very poor. On Ulead 3.5 the voice track took preference over the music track and automatically reduced the music volume when doing a voice-over. Surely this feature is still part of 11.5 Plus?

Any assistance would be appreciated.

Since it does record without 5.1 Dolby activated that is the logical approach I would take. I would also record my narration before adding any music. In fact several of us don't use VS to record narration. We use other programs, which vary according to likes and budgets. I use AUDACITY, a free open source utility for recording and editing sounds. It is capable of recording narrations, applying effects to audio, and converting your mp3 files to wav.

The distortion you are getting while recording over an existing music track may be due to the mic picking up some of the music. Do you use a headset or a stand-alone mic? If you're using a stand-alone mic, try turning your speaker off, or muting the music track while your recording.

VS 3.5??? I can't even find any references to that version. The farthest back Ulead goes for any documentation is 4.0..

With VS11+ it does not do like you claim 3.5 does. You have the ability to reduce the volumes of each track. Since you're editing this is one of the processes, to edit and blend the audio tracks. Could you imagine a program, like Ulead's MediaStudio Pro that has the availability of 99 audio tracks, 99 video tracks, and about the same amount of Time-lines to try and automatically handle the volumes of even 10, so that is adjusts each one down so the one specific track you're recording narration to is more prominent? That's not to mention if you have a few narrations going on...
