Processor suggestions for PSP XI

Post by The Evil Overlord »

I do a lot of low light concert photography with my trusty Canon Rebel XTi set to ISO 1600. The down side of ISO 1600 is of course the noise present in the photos. With some manual intervention, the digital camera noise reduction function present in PSP XI produces some decent results. However, the wait time for my aging AMD Athlon X2 3800+ to process a 60 meg TIFF is getting to be unbearable. I know I'm not slowed down by my disks. I can prove that through perfmon.msc.

I've been trolling these forums looking at threads about which processor best fits which program; some of the information being passed around looks pretty good to my technical eyes. So I ask you: which processor should I be looking at for PSP XI? XI doesn't do squat with multi-core procs; I know that much. So I'm left wondering which processor features would give XI a boost? Large L2 / L3 cache? Super fast FSB vs On-chip memory controller? Certain SSE/2/3/S3/4/5 feature sets? What about internal core architecture vs clock speed? -> Some of the newer procs have redesigned architectures that make them more efficient number crunchers; but is there really a substitute for raw MHz?

I've also been searching for a web site that has PSP benchmarks. Does anyone know of one?

I appreciate your time and effort.

Welcome to the forums,

You're above my head in tech knowledge..;) However If I were looking for a big boost, I would look at a Xenon processor, that in itself would be a big improvement. Then keeping in mind that a PC is only as fast as it's slowest component, Fast FSB, as that governs getting the data to and from RAM. Beyond that I would just be guessing about the rest..

If I remember correctly (6 months ago) I found that many of the processes in XI, especially DCNR, are speeded up in X2.

Thanks for the invite. :)

Where did you find that processes in XI were faster in X2? Without proof, it's no better than rumor.

Practical use and experience but not timed with a stop-watch,
both by me and by others
As well as DCNR, I remember that CA is quicker too.

I respect practical experience. Please pardon the tone of my initial reply to you; after working in the computer field for several years I've grown accustomed to directly confronting claims without proof and those who make them. Sometimes that confrontational behavior spills over into other aspects of my life; so I apologize.

Apology accepted :)
After 35 years experience in the computer field, I know that it can be an art as much as a science :!:
I have been using PSP since version 1.02 in the early 1990s and I am anxious for it to develop and improve - hence my dismay about Crop in X2.

Are YOU the one who who made a completely unrelated forum thread stick in my mind? I recall stumbling across a thread here where a guy was extreeeemly perturbed about the implementation of a "new & improved" crop feature in X2. - It kind of reminds me of my own feelings towards some of the redesigned User Interfaces in MS Vista. *shudder* Would you believe that the new UIs actually slow me down? I fear that MS Server 2008 will suffer from the same UI that Vista does. ...but I digress... Where was I?

It is I.

Crop is the one feature of X2 that has cripplied it, both as a feature UI and from the performance point of view.

I too am using Vista but I don't find it so bad from the UI point of view.
I felt moving to it was inevitable so took the plunge a year ago.
