MSP8 compatible with Windows XP 64 bit?

Post by Tangent »

I know this is probably clearly labelled somewhere, I just can't seem to find it: Is Media Studio Pro 8 compatible with WIndows XP 64 bit edition?

I just finished configuring a high-end PC for a user and their existing media studio software (Avid Liquid Pro) is not XP 64 bit compatible. The user is now talking about downgrading the PC to 32-bit XP but I'd much rather just get them a good 64-bit compatible studio product...

I don't believe so. However I don't know of many on the forum that have XP-64. I know I decided against it, even though I could run it on my desktop. At the time there were very few programs that were written to run on it..

Although not certified, Avid Liquid itself will run on both XP 64 and Vista 64. There are a few adjustments that you must make and you can find them in a sticky on the Avid Liquid site. Unfortunately the Pro BOB won't work on a 64 bit system (no drivers) but it's not REALLY needed. Liquid also needs a dx9 hardware video card and won't work with the newer dx10 cards (Liquid has the same problem MSP has.... it's being discontinued)

Sony Vegas pro will run on a 64bit system, as well as Ulead movie factory, Ulead video studio and Pinnacle studio

Yes, I run MSP8 on XP x64, installs and runs without major issues and does not require the frigs that are needed for Vista (described elsewhere on this forum). The only issues I have had are that the process does not die when the app is closed, and I have to kill it from the task manager. There are occasional crashes, but no worse than 32-bit was. VST11.5+ works also, as do Vegas 8 Pro and Premier. Vegas seems particularly smooth on this platform, and uses all 4 cores for lots of the rendering tasks, even though it's not itself a full 64-bit app. I haven't run Avid, but my general experience of app compatibility is very good on x64.

Depending on the amount of memory & cores you have for your client's machine, it's also possible to run virtual machines very nicely on this platform, including XP 32-bit. I do this for some things that are not 64-bit ready, including some legacy USB devices that cannot be run on x64 such as my coolscan IV, and I also sometimes run MSP8 in a VM, because it only really uses a bit over 1 core ever, and I can minimise the VM (it hacks me off that I can't minimise the MSP8 window while rendering for example).

Congratulations on choosing x64 rather than Vista!
