UVS 10 plus audio fading problems

Post by leezy2 »

I have recently installed UVS 10 plus on a new machine (previous PSU went bang, new machine much higher spec.) I cannot get the fade options to work on .wav files in the music channel. Neither the fade in or out has an effect, although the changes are shown in the rubber band view. The volume also does not fade to zero at the end of the file. I am trying to preview in the project view, I have run the SP1 file, I have searched the forum for a solution and I am not new to using the package. I seem to remember this being a problem when version 10 first came out but I also remember fixing it (with a patch), but this does not seem to be working this time. Please tell me what incredibly obvious thing have I forgotten about so I can quite rightly kick myself and feel suitably ashamed for not writing it down the first time!

I've noticed that when you drag the rubber bands all the way down it does not fade to zero. Seems that using the fade out button is the only way to do that. :?

But you say the fade in/out buttons don't work at all. Make sure you have a value set in Preferences (I don't know if setting it to zero is possible).

You say you are previewing in Project mode :?

Did you try saving the project after making these changes, then closing and re-opening VS?

I have the fade time set to 10sec by default and I initially used the fade out button, but when that didn't work I tried to change it manually with the rubber bands. It looks like it should work, the red line in the audio view panel drops off to zero from 10sec before the end of the file, but no change in volume! I am previewing my changes after clicking 'timeline view' and then clicking in the white area on the timeline so 'Project' is highlighted under the video preview window (so I am previewing the project rather than just listening to the .wav file without the changes I have made). I have tried several restarts and reboots, as well as reinstalling the package and service pack 1 file. I've been using VS since version 5 was first produced and I'm sure I had this problem before and fixed it, I just can't remember how!

I appreciate the help.

Have your tried rendering your project to a new video file (Share > Create Video File > DVD) then playing that back on a software media player to see if in fact the fade-outs are there?

I tried buring the project to disk as I had the same thought, but the fade options did not work (on the audio track only, the video track fades are fine). I have just tried writing a small part of the project to file rather than disk but the audio fade settings are still ignored.

What's the source of your wav files? It's strange that changes to the audio in your video track work, but not for the wav files. Are you using the music or narration track?

I don't think this would have any affect on this, but what version of QuickTime do you have installed? I know it will mess with the SmartSound Quicktracks. http://www.smartsound.com/support/answe ... php?id=582

When you reinstalled, did you completely remove all traces of VS10 from your PC before reinstalling, or just an add/remove from the control panel, or just a repair install? Try removing all traces before attempting to reinstall.

I've tried to get my install do replicate what's happening on your system, however it fades, whenever and howver I set it to. I don't recall this sort of problem when VS10 was released or during beta testing..

My .wav files are being written from Cakewalks Music Creator 3, in the music track. I am now using this to put the fade in before writing the .wav file to get around the problem.
The re-install I have tried both as a repair and as a fresh install having used the VS uninstall option.
I tried to update the SmartSound stuff but the installer fails saying that the directory found does not contain a registered copy of the software and to re-run it locating the the correct directory. The quicktracks option in the auto music tab (audio panel) are greyed out. So maybe this is an issue. I cannot see how to fix it though as I have never had to mess with this before.

How about mp3

Have you tried rendering your .wav files to .mp3 first?

Have you tried other .wav files from other sources?

I'm wondering if it has something to do with a residual signature left by your Cakewalk .wav editor.

Problem solved!

Post by leezy2 »

So now how stupid do I feel that I didn't try this already?
Thanks Westbrook, imported a .wav file from CD, no problems with the fade at all! Obviously must be something to do with Music Creator and not VS. I'll try tweaking the settings on that when I burn the .wav file.
Like I said, needed a fresh set of eyes. Thanks everyone for your time.

I'm glad I was actually able help someone.

Up to now, I've always been the recipient of help.

I must be learning something in here.
