is it really this difficult? i captured about 4 minutes of video from my camcorder, its saved as a ulead project, .avi
i want to get about 1.5 minutes of that and save it off as a separate mpg1, have spent about 1 hour reading various and trying everything in editor and movie wizard and just getting nowhere.
is there a tutorial that even gets close to doing something like this or some manual that explains this. or is this just not possible in ulead 8.
i can get the portion i want in mulitrim video, then go into movie wizard, drag it in, next always brings up movie creation process was aborted, but after ok to that msg i still get the create video file screen, select ntsc mpg1, but it doesn't respond with anything like 'save as' and i'm at a dead end.

I don't know if you've read through any of our tutorials found in the Video Product Tutorials Forums: http://phpbb.ulead.com.tw/EN/viewforum.php?f=27
Steve wrote an excellent tutorial called From Camcorder to DVD with VideoStudio: http://phpbb.ulead.com.tw/EN/viewtopic.php?t=13421
Here's another one provided by a member: Corel VideoStudio The Basics
Several by TakeoneFlix; VideoStudio Tutorials
Then my favorite is by Charlie Hills, and I think you can still get one for VS8... http://www.getting-results.com/ I highly recommend Charlie Hill's books. Comes complete with sample videos, and projects..

We also need other information. For example, what kind of camera are you capturing from -- a mini DV digital or some other sort? What are the properties of the .avi you captured? There are many varieties of video formats which use .avi as their extension. So could you please right click on the .avi within VS8 and copy all its properties here.
If the .avi is, in any case, so short, there is no real need to use multi-trim or even the movie wizard. You can do it all in the Editor module.
If you have the multi-trimmed video in your timeline, then click on a part you *don't* want and it will become highlighted i.e. selected. Then simply delete it. Do that with all the parts you don't want. Then you will be left with the part you want on the timeline. It will still, of course, be in .avi format, but if you want to convert it to mpeg-1, then you choose Share > Create Video File then select either VCD or mpeg-1. A dialogue box should then appear. You give your new file a name, then press Save on that dialogue box. The new file will be saved to your working folder (File > Preferences) and an icon of it should appear in the VS8 library window.
Is there any particular reason you want to save the .avi in such a low quality format?

Thanks. You have captured DV/AVI using the Type 2 (default) encoder. Though set as the default encoder for DV, VS seems to deal better with DV/AVI captured using the Type 1 encoder. But if your computer and VS can handle Type 2, then use that. Either type should be very high quality.
As for your wanting to email it, then if you want to retain high quality but in a small file format, mpeg-1 is not the way to go. If the friends to whom you want to email it have PCs using Windows, you might be better off using the Windows Media Format (.wmv or even its higher quality cousin .asf) which they can then play on Windows Media Player. Or if they have the DivX or XVid codec, you could send it in that format as it also gives very high quality in a very small file.
