Welcome to the forums,
1. What OS are you running it on? VS9 is not made to run on Vista machines. You may be able to get it to run on Vista under XP compatibility mode, it may not be that stable though.
2.What workflow are you using? Are you creating a video file from your project first (Share>Create Video File), then clearing the time line before going to the burn module (Share>Create Disc)? Or are you going straight to the burn module with a project in the time line? The latter can be done, however it requires the creation of DVD compatible MPEG-2 video file, along with everything else that needs to be created, at one time. This can cause things to fail during the burning process.
If you're trying to burn to disc, try Creating DVD Folders to see if it still errors out and closes down. Several members use this method, just so we can have one last check to see if the menus, chapters, ect., were created properly before committing to disc.
If you're running several background processes, try eliminating all that are not necessary, such as web browsing, anti-virus, spycheckers.
Lastly the SE versions are watered down from the full versions. Any patches or updates will not install to them. So you may have an issue that could be corrected by installing a patch, however not be able to.

I am running windows XP. I am going straight to the burn module with a project in the time line.(Share>Create Disc)Are you saying that I should save project first to a created DVD file then try to burn in the burn module?

Yes, that's what I'm suggesting. It's a workflow that some member(s) came up with a few years ago, due to the constant problems when trying to burn a disc from a project file.
A project file is nothing more then a glorfied text file, full of instructions to the program. You don't actually import or insert the original source video, image, or audio clips into the program. VS creates thumbnail representations of those files, and at some point, either the Share>Create Video File, or in your case while trying to burn a disc, VS needs to create a video file from that project, ie; the instructions.
Sometimes when trying to burn a DVD using a project file, especially when that project is somewhat complex, and/or your lacking in PC horsepower, it can be too much for your PC to handle, and thus crashes the program. So creating the DVD MPEG-2 file first will lessen the task placed on your PC at burn time.
