Need MP4 codecs for VS10+ / XP SP2

Post by WestbrookNH »

Where can I get RELIABLE mp4 codecs?

I don't mind paying for it, I just don't want it to break anything.

The reason I think I need the codecs is that when I try to insert an mp4 video, VS10+ issues an error message complaining about mismatched file formats.
Unable to open file
File format mismatch

What is the source of the mp4 files? Does it use .mp4 or .avi as its extension? Can you give us any other of its properties?

Hi, Ken.

All I know is that it has .mp4 as a file extenstion. I'm looking at file properties, but it doesn't say anything other than date or size.

When I mouseover .mp3 files, or .wav files, I information including bit-rate, etc.

But I get nothing but "MP4 file size date" when I mouseover this one.

There are some MPEG4 codecs listed in your above list (H263)
However MPEG4 comes in a number of variants. Just looking at my copy of VideoStudio 11.5+ I see the following

Image and Image

Did you install this update patch
Ulead VideoStudio 10 Vista Pack (Release Date: 2006/12/22)

If so please read the small print:
NOTEs:

* Windows Vista and the Windows logo are trademarks or registered trademarks of Microsoft Corporation in the United States and/or other countries
* This Update Pack is for Ulead® VideoStudio® 10/10 Plus (BOX, ESD, UPG, and activated TBYB) version.
* This Update Pack cannot be uninstalled.
* Since Video for Windows (VFW) is not supported in Vista, VFW codecs such as Indeo, Cinepak are not supported in Vista. The video content files provided by VideoStudio will now be encoded using .WMV instead of Indeo codecs.
* Some 3D transition effects that won¡¦t be supported on Vista are removed from current release, including: Flying Board, Flying Cube, Flying Flip, Flying Fold, and Folding Box. Some templates under "Album", "Flash Light" and "Mask" transition effect are also not supported.
* WDM devices are not supported by Vista. Thus, not supported by VideoStudio.
* WMV and MPEG 4 format CAPTURE is not supported.
* MOV and MPEG 4 formats are not supported in this version.

* WinDVD 7, PocketDV show, and Cool3D are not supported.

Thanks, Steve,

You guys are awesome.

I don't see any MP4 in my Compression listbox in the VS 10+ Project Options dialog. I think that's the VS10+ version of the Video Save Options you have in VS11+.

However, in the Create Video dialog, I do see the same four MPEG-4 options you have in your drop down list.

So it looks like I can SAVE MP4, but I cannot Import MP4.

Is that a limitation of VS10+, or do I just need the right codecs?

Steve,

I just read the rest of your post.

Yes, I did apply the vista upgrade patch very shortly after it appeared.

However, I didn't see the small print where it says that MP4 capture is not supported.

That explains it.

Have to ponder upgrading to 11+

As it is, I'm considering purchasing DVD Workshop, because I need to be able to support Subtitles in 5 languages.

Perhaps I'll just use a MPEG-4 to MPEG-2 converter. Might compromise quality, but it might cut expenses.

Nothing is easy.
