DVD MovieFactory 6 wants to render my MPEG2's

Post by smokey133 »

I have MovieFactory 6 installed on Vista 64 with latest patches. When I open an MPEG2 (recorded with SageTV), MF6 wants to render the video, although I have "Do not convert MPEG complioant videos" checked. This didn't happen with Movie Factory 4.0. Here are the properties of my typical files:

MPEG files
24 bits, 720 x 480, 29.97 fps
Upper Field First
(DVD-NTSC), 4:3
Video data rate: Variable (Max. 9800 kbps)
Audio data rate: 192 kbps
MPEG audio layer 2, 48 KHz, Stereo

MPEG files
24 bits, 720 x 480, 29.97 fps
Upper Field First
(DVD-NTSC), 4:3
Video data rate: Variable (Max. 7040 kbps)
Audio data rate: 384 kbps
MPEG audio layer 2, 48 KHz, Stereo

Any ideas?

Try also checking ON "XDisc" (Also under the GEAR Icon).
If that doesn't work they need to be re-encoded (provided you don't edit them, any edited videos must be re-encoded)

I tried checking XDisc, same thing.

I'm just wondering why it worked fine in 4.0. Is 6.0 more strict on what's "MPEG2 Compliant"?

I've also had a few files that I thought were compliant, but the Corel/Ulead programs insisted on re-rendering. I never figured out what was "wrong" with the files... I assume it's something subtle, like the GOP setting, or something in the header... :?

It might have something to do with the audio. MPEG-2 audio is not compliant for NTSC. So at a minimum, the audio will have to be re-rendered and re-multiplexed. I'm not sure if this will cause Movie Factory to re-render the video too...

If you are re-rendering to LPCM audio, the total bitrate on your 9800kbps file will exceed the DVD maximum bitrate of 10,080kbps.

I found the problem. I had to select DVD 8.5 on the Burn page. MF6 was rendering it to fit it on a 4.7G image.
