Capture format problems

Post by TimYoung »

I am a newbie to this software and am trying to compile a project shot partly on my own camera and partly on other peoples. My own material imports correctly into the project (PAL 720x576 4:3), but I'm having real problems with a tape from another camera (PAL 720x576 16:9). I have been trying to capture it by playback on my camera. The shape of the frame looks fine on the timeline - but the actual image in the project appears to have the widescreen conversion applied twice (i.e. it looks like about 22:9 or so).

Can I get my project to work if it is a mixture of the two inputs -or how does anyone else get around this?

Sorry if this is a really dumb question!

Thanks for any advice!!!

Hi Tim

You can only have one aspect ratio for your projects, either 4:3 or 16:9.

Although you can import 4:3 clip into a 16:9 project, or visa versa, but as you have found, one of the video¡¦s will not display correctly.

You can use the ¡¥Distort¡¦ function under the ¡¥Attributes ¡¥ tab, this will allow you to stretch the frame.

If there is a lot of editing to do It may be best to create two projects one for each aspect.

Read my guide to 16:9 a look at widescreen, from the link below

Hope this helps.

Dear Trevor

Thank you for that - it clarifies a lot.

However, I am still confused by my problem clip. I followed the information on your guide - and repeated the creation of my project - once with 16:9 set, the other without. In both cases I imported the clip - and in both cases it came out with the Y-axis shrunk to the same 20ish:9 ratio. There seemed to be no difference between the two - and neither showed the clip at 16:9.

Hi Tim

Problems with corrupt or incorrect aspects ratios can be difficult identify.
Seeing the video would be the easiest solution.

We need to view the video clips properties.

Do This.

From File-Preferences check ¡¥Show messages when inserting first¡K¡K¡K¡K.

Start a New Project

Insert one of the clips to the timeline, you should see an info window,
Select ¡¥Details¡¦

Use your mouse to highlight the right panel ¡¥Video Properties¡¦

Paste these to the forum.
(Ctrl + C to copy----Ctrl + V to paste)

Repeat for the second clip, remember to Start a New Project first.

About the video clip
Project properties are 4:3
When you view a 4:3 video clip it should fill the preview window, the video should look in proportion, not distorted.
When you view a widescreen 16:9 it should show in proportion with black top and bottom, but the black is part of the video/project frame. (project being 4:3)

Project properties 16:9
A 4:3 will look smaller with black border all sides
A 16:9 will show with black top and bottom, (not part of the frame) in each case the video should be in proportion.

Are your video clips distorted or in proportion?

Hi Tim

One other thing springs to mind.

Sometimes a 4:3 clip has a black border applied top and bottom to simulate widescreen.

Although this will play and look widescreen it is still 4:3.

You assume it to be 16:9 and capture it as 16:9, which of course you would.
This would give the shape you are indicating, the black top and bottom being quite large.

OK

Insert the problem clip to the timeline, set the project properties to 4:3
Change the background colour from black to any other.

Do you see any black lines??????????????
