windvd 9 missing spdif

Post by magnusr »

There is no option to choose spdif output. I can only see speaker selection.

OS: Vista X64 SP1
AUDIO: Realtek ALC889A, R189 driver

Other software can see and use spdif.

Me too - Realtek problem

Post by CG-Eng »

I have the same problem, am using Vista 32-bit with Realtek audio. Did you find a solution? My main reason for getting this is for audio, otherwise the Cyperlink I got with my LG is fine.

With WinDVD9 running, look at

I assume mobo has spdif out.

right click the speaker icon in system task bar,
Open Volume Mixer / Device / Realtek Digital output / check levels.

Also
right click speaker icon
Playback Devices (also in Ctrl Panel/Sound/Playback)
Realtek digital output.

EDIT - while trying to check that out, I hosed Realtek in Vista so uninstalled it, sorta, and re-installed it. The one I was using was 1.91 . 1.95 is out now, so I put that up. Unfortunately I have nothing to check the spdif output with so I can't help more.

Thanks for the reply. Yes, I do have SPDIF, it is hooked up correctly.

I am not sure what you meant, Rose3/Kris. Maybe you pasted a picture which is not showing on my computer?

I have cruised around the playback menu you describe, everything looks OK, Dolby and DTS boxes are checked to show support. I just found an update on my mobo (tw.giga-byte.com) for realtek, so I am now running 6.0.1.5618 dated 5/7/2008. Had to run setup twice to get it to install. I have cruised around DeviceManager as well.

So, it does not work with the old or the new version of Realtek drivers

The best driver should be the one from your mobo mfgr.

However, I am using 1.95 from Realtak corp since the one from DFI is about 6 months old. But if it doesn't work, it doesn't work, and I have no idea why. Darn! Can you get output from the spdif connection using other programs? Wish I could help! I'll have to scrounge up an spdif tester from somewhere but that will take me months.

EDIT 6.0.1.5636

Try Nero 8

Thanks for the help, Magnusr

Nero Showtime 4, one of the programs in Nero 8 ultimate, with the additional codec, works perfectly. $100 and you get 21 other applications.

I have exactly the same problem and the weird thing is that MCE plays audio just fine: Digital and DTS without questions. This means that the OS and driver settings are OK but nevertheless WinDVD stills plays analog sound.

Where can one push WinDVD 9 to play DTS over SPDIF instead of the normal speakers one can select?

I too had the same problem. I installed the latest update and the situation improved, but it is still not quite right. I can now get audio over SPDIF when it is seleted as the default sound device in the Vista Sound Config panel, but the SPDIF option does not appear as an option in the WinDVD Audio Playback Devices window (it shows only "2 speakers" and "Headphones").

One detail that nobody else has mentioned that may be relevant is that my Vista Sound Config Panel lists 2 devices for audio playback: Speakers and SPDIF. When I want to use the SPDIF connection, I need to change the default device to SPDIF.

I am still only playing DVDs, but I am worried that when I move to Blu Ray, WinDVD will not correctly downsample audio to DD5.1 if it does not know that it is using the SPDIF connection.

Dave.

P.S. Like the OP, I too am running Vista x64 SP1 with MB-based sound (SigmaTel in my case).
