DVD picture is cropped when displayed on TV

Post by pnalepa »

Are there edge boundaries when adding text to slides and MPEG. I notice the text is cropped when watching the compiled DVD on any TV.

Is this normal and that I cannot put text right on the edge of the picture.
I have changed aspect ratios, 16:9 to 4:3 and still text is missing.
thanks

Yes this is normal. There is a Title Safe Area, that will not be cut-off by what is called the overscan of the TV. In MovieFactory this can be adjusted in the Preferences dialog, on the Advance tab. This will just display an outline on your preview window. Keeping everything inside this outline will ensure that it is not cut off.

The red arrows in this image, are pointing to that Title Safe boundary.

TV Safe Area

Post by pnalepa »

How do I display this safe area to work within. There is no box overlayed on the preview screen.
If I set TV safe area this to zero then I guess I could now use the entire screen for text.
thanks in advance

You set the TV Safe area in the Preferences Dialog. In the lower left corner, mouse over the icon that looks like a sheet of paper, it should say Settings and Options. Click on it to open a menu, and select Preferences. In the Preferences window, click on the Advance tab. You should see the TV Safe Area, the default setting is 10%.

When you are working in DVDMF, the TV Safe area is represented by the Yellow Lines around the Preview window. Anything outside that area risks being cut-off by the television overscan. Generally that is 10%, however depending on the television, can be greater.

The TV Safe area just provides you with a guideline, it no way effects the actual television. So in short make sure you place everything inside that yellow boundary.

Thankyou.
I tried to push the boundary to see if I can maximise my area but as you said what ever i do will not effect the tv picture area.

Hence 10% will be my guideline. I do notice that this box is displayed when creating titles but it is not displayed for videos and slides.

I just wish that when in slideshow photos or video editing, this boundary is displayed when adding text . MF6 + does not display this box when using slideshow/video editing and I get caught out every time.
