Problem capturing video from USB video capture device

Post by elyoh »

Video Capture Device: Dazzle USB DVC100
VideoStudio 11.5+

Hi

Hopefully someone will be able to help me with this problem. I had a search through the forum but didn't turn up anything similar.

When I click the capture button, I get the following error:
Cannot Start the Capture Graph
Similarly pressing the capture image button returns:
Failed to Capture the Image

[15200:40:0]
[15023:4:2]
The capture device works fine in Windows Movie Maker, Windows Media Encoder, and the settings I'm using are the same; that is PAL I (for UK) and composite (I'm using a composite input video cable from a VCR to the device).

The main reason I want to get this to work in VS is that Windows Movie Maker and Media Encoder capture in .avi or .wmv format which needs converting for burning to DVD. I want to be able to capture in DVD compliant .mpg format straight off :(

Thanks

Welcome to the forums,

First don't feel alone with this problem, others have posted the same problem. However Dazzle devices just do not work with VS, because they are a product of a strong competitor, Pinnacle. The device is proprietary, and they protect the code needed by developers like Corel to make their products work with it.

Generally Dazzle devices come with some capture software. Try using it to capture your video. Once it is on your PC you can insert it into VS for editing.

And, if you are going to do any kind of editing I would capture to dv-avi, because it is lossless. Editing MPEG-2 can be tricky and sometimes causes problems.

So you could capture via Movie Maker then import those files to VS.

Thanks for the advice.

It's a shame it doesn't work direct in VS but at least I can capture video in the software bundled with the capture device and then make some fancy menus in VS.

Regarding interoperability between brands, it really is bad that Pinnacle protects the code to prevent the device from working in other software. I doubt that many people are going to own and run two separate video editing suites like VS11 and the Pinnacle equivalent at the same time! Proper competition would be allowing the end user to choose on what best suited their needs, rather than forcing them to use one particular piece of software.

Thanks again
