Damaged or illegally modified
Hi,
I'm having trouble installing my registered copy of Paint Shop Pro X on my new laptop. After logging in at the Corel website and locating my download file and serial number, the installer would give me this message:
"The wizard was interrupted before Paint Shop Pro could be completely installed." ...and advised me to run setup again later. Well, that never worked. I even tried re-downloading the file from Corel just in case something went wrong during the download. Same problem.
So I browse my Program Files and find the Corel folder, then I go exploring and find a couple of different setup files and try them. One of them successfully lets me install the Trial Version -- so I'm thinking "Okay, I can just run this and then supply my product key somewhere."
But no, instead when I go to start up PSPX, I get a message saying:
"This installation of Paint Shop Pro has been damaged or illegally modified."
What can I do to get PSP working?
Thanks for any help.

Try doing a search on your system for PSIService.exe. This should be running. It is Protexis Licensing Service. Corel uses this with their latest products. If it is not, the programs will not install.

That service is installed by the program. It helps prevent piracy. Everytime you start one of the programs it will check to be sure it is a valid, legitimate version. I'm not sure when Corel starting using Protexis, it may not have been implemented until a later version.
Are you running XP or Vista? Did you previously have it installed, and uninstalled it for some reason?
Full versions will not install over a trial version. Try completely uninstalling the program. You may need to go through and delete any left over folders, files, that did not get uninstalled. Then make sure that your running under a user account that has Administrative Permission. Try shutting down security applications like anti-virus, anti-spyware. Then install the program.

The protexis licensing service is one of the Windows Services and if it is disabled then Paint Shop pro will not run.
Please click the Windows START button and in the RUN box type
services.msc
Then look for these two entries

If one or both are not running then double click the entry to bring up a dialog box

And also the log on tab

Hi again,
Thanks for trying everyone, but I am not having success. The total uninstall/reinstall did not do the trick.
When I followed the directions in the post directly above this one, nothing with the word Protexis showed up among the services listed. Mine goes from Protected Storage to Quality Windows. I just don't have it anywhere.
Anything else I can do?

I found information about this problem at the corel support site in the data base.
http://support.corel.com/
I tried to paste the url of the answer in here, but because it's such a long url, the bulletin board would not accept it, so I'm pasting an edited version of the info below.
This error is related to the Paint Shop Pro X
Correct this problem by doing one of the two following procedures:
1. Install to a custom location:
Create a folder at the desired install location. For example, if you wish to install to C:\Program Files, you can create a new folder called Paint Shop Pro X or Corel Photo Album 6 there. Run the installation again. Perform a custom installation and point the installation to the location of the new folder you created.
Installing Paint Shop Pro X to a custom location.
1.Insert the Paint Shop Pro X disc into your CD ROM drive and choose to install Paint Shop Pro X (if installing from a downloaded file, double left-click on the downloaded installer file).
2. Follow the installation prompts, and complete all information as requested by the installer.
3.When you arrive at a screen prompting to add program shortcuts (two boxes), look to the bottom left corner of the screen. select ADVANCED OPTIONS button.
4.Select the CHANGE button.
5. Use the drop down box to change the installation to a location of your choice.
6.Click OK to finish the installation.
2. Install to the default location:
If you wish to perform a default installation of the program, try the install using one of the following commands. Use the commands by copying and pasting the command into the Start | Run dialog box. See the Copying and Pasting section at the end of this article if you¡¦re unfamiliar with this procedure. NOTE if you still receive the error with this procedure, attempt procedure #1 above. This often allows the installation to complete successfully.
Note: The following CD installation commands use drive (D:) as the CD-ROM drive. Change the letter to the corresponding drive you¡¦re installing from if you¡¦re installing from an optical drive with a different drive letter.
Paint Shop Pro X CD Installation
msiexec /i "D:\Paint Shop Pro X\pspx.msi" USERNAME=user
Paint Shop Pro X Download (ESD) Installation
msiexec /i "C:\Program Files\Corel\Corel Paint Shop Pro X - Installation Files\pspx.msi" USERNAME=user
Hope this helps

WOW, thanks Nightshadow! That first option you listed worked once I went digging around deep in the installation files. I had to find the one that seemed to be letting me install the trial version, not the full program -- and then I did finally get to the advanced options you mentioned, and everthing worked. I installed to a different location and that seems to be the answer, so thanks a lot. I have been going rounds with this problem for a couple of months now.
