When I import, drag files into VS10+ timeline for a new

project, the files are AVI, but the project properties tab always defaults to MPEG. Is this normal? I would think the project properties would match the file type, AVI.

Yes, the default project properties are MPEG2. However, in Preferences you can set it so the project properties change to match the first clip in the project.
