Creating the MPEG file from the edited AVI file

Post by kebrinton »

Here's a strange thing UNrelated to UVS9.

I've finished editing my .AVI file and have gone to Create Video File / Same as Project Properties and now have a new .AVI file incorporating all my editing. Next I want to create the .MPEG file which will later get burned to DVD.

I follow the tutorial. I create a new project and name it. I go to File > Project Properties and select my .MPEG project settings. I save. Then I click the lower-left icon and import my edited .AVI file, which appears in my Timeline.

Then I click Share > Create Video File / Same as Project Properties. It is then that I discover my project properties are .AVI, not the .MPEG properties that I set.

Why is this?

I have to go back and AGAIN set File > Project Properties to .MPEG, and edit those.

Why not just use Share/Create Video File/NTSC (or PAL) DVD...."?

Hi Keith

When you start a NEW project, the project properties will change to match the the FIRST clip to be placed in the timeline.
In your case AVI.
Even though you have set the project to Mpeg settings. These will change to match the First clip properties.

You can stop the auto change.
File / Preferences / Show messages when inserting first video into timeline.

When you insert the FIRST clip you will receive an info window select ‘Details’ to see the settings, select NO if you want to preserve your project settings.
---------------------------------------------

When you go to Share, you could select one of the templates Pal/Ntsc DVD.

If you wish to make your own templates you can from Tools / Make Movie Manager.
Your templates will be added to the list.

Although I prefer the way you do it using Same as Project Settings.

Hope this Helps

Thanks Trevor and Terry.

I'm locked into the methodology taught by Jerry Jones. It's HIS way.

I think your hint about "Show messages when inserting" will take care of it. I didn't always have things set up this way; it used to work the way I expected.

I recently discovered an old notebook I used to write in when first using VS7 in 2003, describing my problems to the universe. Dang, I must have been a blithering idiot! But...the program is definitely NOT intuitive, and we all have to learn. Then later things seem so obvious...

Take care, friends.

Unfortunately, changing the preference doesn't stop VS from changing your properties when the first clip goes in the timeline - it only stops your notification that a change was made. If you permit the notification, then you have the option of preventing it. This is all part of the great properties train wreck, which catches everyone sooner or later.
