In Charlie Hills' book, Getting Results with VideoStudio, he actually had a tutorial for this. It centered around using a white color block - only a frame or two. I'm sure somebody that still has the book will chime in with the exact details.

To create a camera flash according to Charlie Hill...
  • You will of course have 2 video or image clips in the time-line.
  • Place 2 White color clips between them. So the sequence would be Video Clip, White Color Clip, White Color Clip, Video Clip.
  • Now drop 1 Fade to White Transition between the First Video Clip and the First Color Clip. Then drop a second Fade to White Transition between the 2nd Color Clip and the 2nd Video Clip.
The following must be done in the order specified or it will not work. VS will not allow the durations otherwise.
  • In StoryBoard mode, highlight the 1st Transition, and change the duration to 2Frames, not seconds.
  • Now highlight the 1st White Color Clip, and change the duration to 2 Frames.
  • Next go to and highlight the 2nd Fade to White Transition, and change the duration to 6 Frames.
  • Now change the 2nd White Color Clips duration to 6 Frames.
Go to Project mode, press play. You should now have a camera flash transition, again courtesy Charlie Hill..

Credit goes to Charlie Hill, and his Getting Results with VideoStudio 9 book. , which you can purchase and learn a lot more. Now hopefully he won't sue me for violating copyrights...;)

Thanks for the information -

Would I be correct in assuming information contained in this book Getting Results with VideoStudio 9 would still be relevant for VS 11.5 Plus

Yes most of the information would be. Just treat VS11 as having only 1 overlay track. Charlie covers far more than just the mechanics of doing things. He gets you to "think outside the box", and explains a lot about video editing itself.

He also wrote one called Getting Results with MediaStudio Pro 8, which I also own.

Great Thanks a lot for that Ron

I am in New Zealand and some of these books are not readily available but I see it is downloadable as a PDF File so I will opt for that.

Cheers Chris
