version 7 se basic won't capture more than 320x240

I'm trying to capture a still image at 640x480, but the setting only goes up to 320x240. This worked until my hard drive crashed and I had to reload everything. I've patched it to 7.01, the software came with the compusa digitizer which VS reports as USB 2820.

How can I get my 640x480 setting back? I have to go into capture settings to select s-video, and that's where I should be able to select 640, but it only shows 320. I realize now that this is an old version, but I just bought this thing a few months ago, I don't want to spend more on software.

It sounds like a driver problem to me. You might try re-installing the drivers, or looking for updated drivers on the Net. (But, I don't know why the drivers would "degrade"... Maybe the 7.01 patch messed it up...)

Did the device come with any other software? Capture-hardware usually comes with capture-software that's specially made to work with the particular hardware. (Your SE version may have been tweaked to work with the device)

I realize now that this is an old version... I don't want to spend more on software.

If all else fails, you might want to download the trial version of VS11. But, I'd guess VS11 is less likely to work with any "random" analog capture device. (Some people keep the old software installed for capturing.) If the device doesn't work with the software that came with it, the only solution may be new hardware and new software.

thanks for the reply. I updated the driver and I'm now getting higher resolution choices in the settings, but nothing above 320x240 works. I can select 640x480, but go right back in to the settings and it's back to 320x240. If I choose a lower res it sticks, but anything higher goes back to the default.
