I went and put an mpeg file in there that I previously made, (when I made it I went to share and then create video file and then choose the dvd mpeg setting.) it is about 12 minutes long but because it is not a project but a video file it played just fine. If I try to open the same video as a project before it was saved as a dvd/mpeg it will not play. It will open and I can change things but I can't preview them and I can't resave them as a video file because the project won't play. This is getting very frustrating. PLEASE HELP

Have you updated your DirectX to the very latest patch (dated March 2008) available from the Microsoft DirectX website. Some recent Windows updates (for both XP and Vista) appear to have caused some people problems with VS, and updating DirectX has helped them. Note that the March '08 update patch works with both XP (DirectX 9.0c) and Vista (DirectX 10.0).
If you have installed an mega codec packs recently, you might also want to try unistalling them.

As for the DirectX update, you will not see any new number for your version of DirectX unless you use a program like DXDiag. Otherwise, you will only see 9.0c for XP and 10 for Vista. But if you have not updated DirectX manually, it does not happen automatically as part of Windows' general updates. So if you can't recall having done so, you probably have not!
Similarly with a mega codec pack -- if you are not sure what that means, it is unlikely that you have installed one. It is a program such as the K-Lite Mega Codec Pack, with contains literally hundreds of video and audio codecs, but which often conflict with each other and with existing codecs on your computer, if you install them all. Frankly, they cause more problems than they are worth, although they can be useful if properly used i.e. selecting one or more codecs from the entire set and only installing them. (A codec is a sort of enCOer-DECoder filter which is used for reading, playing and converting video and audio formats.)

Yes, DivX is a codec, but only one and very common. Installing it is unlikely to have caused your problem. And it is only one codec, not a pack. Also totally different from DirectX which is not a codec.
Sorry, but I am currently overseas, working from a borrowed computer, so don't have immediate access to a link to the procedure for full uninstallation of VS11. Hopefully someone else will jump in on that part of your question.

I used to have problems with SmartSound tracks. When played alone the work fine. When added to a project the caused problems (stuttering, etc.). And the more transitions, effects, etc., seemed to make the problem worse.
My fix was to determine the length I needed for the SmartSound, then render just that to a wav file. I would then insert that wav file into my project.
I don't use SmartSound anymore - got bored with them and didn't want to spend the money for new ones.
