A couple thoughts about PSPX2 interface elements

Post by allicorn »

Hiya,

First off, great product. I've been a PSP user for many years and - generally - I'm very happy with it and always glad to recommend it to others.

Having recently upgraded from PSPX to PSPX2 I have a couple comments to make about some interface elements and a little bug or two.

Old bug

I reported this when PSPX came out and its still there in PSPX2 (I never got round to upgrading to PSPXI but I assume its in there too). Its very easy to reproduce:

Open PSPX2
Create a new image with File->New Image
Rightclick the menubar and select Customize
Select the Keyboard tab
Select any menu, toolbar or tool. Assign a new keyboard shortcut. (eg, try assigning "G" to the "Zoom" tool as in PSP prior to V8 )
Close the Customize dialog.
Try your keyboard shortcut and you'll find it works.
Now close PSPX2 and then launch it again.
Your keyboard shortcut has been lost. If you return to the customization dialog you'll see that whatever the previous value was has been restored.

In order to permanently save a keyboard configuration you must launch PSPX2, do NOT open any images or create a new blank image, do your customization, close PSPX2. The Keyboard Customization will then be permanent.

Basically, it appears that Keyboard Customization is only permanent if it happens during a PSPX2 session where no image is opened or created.

Ok, small bug, but it'll trip a few folks up no doubt. It would be nice to see this patched or at least put on the list for PSPX3.

Browser Changes

Whilst I'm sure I'll eventually get used to it, I do find rather baffling the choice to remove the ability to browse your entire filesystem.

In PSPX, the folding list on the left side of the browser allowed me to navigate my entire filesystem just like Windows Explorer. Now, I have to manually add specific filesystem branches in order to make them available to browse.

I understand that this is obviously related to the new MediaCataloguer system and that for certain types of users it may be convenient to never have to entirely understand where their files are. However, for a shop with a large and very dynamic LAN full of images, the ability to freely navigate up and down thorugh the entire filesystem from within the browser is extremely useful.

All I'm really asking for here is a "My Computer" node in the folding tree view on the browser's left side. That and maybe a Parent ("Go Up") button on the browser toolbar. PSPX had it. Can we have it back in a PSPX2 patch maybe? Would be much appreciated. :-)

On the plus side, the "Palette Mode - vs - Document Mode" ability is excellent. Exactly the kind of flexibility to different users' ways of working that I couldn't approve of more.

Layer Styles

Very happy to see this addition to PSP. Its obviously quite new to the codebase though and clearly there's some room for improvement.

For one, more Styles! Though I'm sure that's planned. :-)

More seriously, the controls for each Style are mostly sliders and that nifty little directionality widget. These things need associated numeric fields! If there's no numeric field associated with the control then its impossible to precisely match Layer Style properties across multiple documents, which really reduces the usefulness of the Layer Style capability.

A non-interactive number against each slider would help, but ideally I think these should be sliders with connected numeric fields or spin controls. I'm sure your interface team must already have noted this for future patching but I thought it was worth pointing it out.

Uh... well lastly I guess... since I've mentioned patches several times, I'll leavethe obvious implicit question hanging here... ;-)

Cheers!
