Will Canopus ADVC55/110 capture device work with VS11+?
I was all set to buy a Canopus capture device when tech support at Ulead said there were "issues" and that I should lean towards a Hauppauge internal card. Is this accurate? I have lots of VHS and Hi8 tapes to convert to DVD, are there any better devices than the Canopus firewire boxes?
Thanks for your time.

Canopus ADVC and VS11+
I can't comment specifically about the ADVC55/110, but I've used a Canopus ADVC-100 for years with VS. I downloaded the TBYB version of VS11+ and it worked just fine with my ADVC-100. But the features of VS11+ were not significant enough for me to upgrade from VS10+. Even though I've upgraded from VS7 to 10 and all versions in between, I'm going to wait for VS12 or later.

In my opinion there is nothing better than a canopus box.
Canopus don't supply their own software with these units.
It's good to see someone has had success, as some people haven't been able to capture this way, but you could always use movie maker, supplied with any windows version from ME upwards to capture, then import the dv.avi file into VS for editing. Much better to do this than use something like a hauppage card.............

Thank you all for your input. I still plan on getting the Canopus box despite the "issues" as mentioned by tech support. Perhaps he thought I was going to try and capture directly to VS, I plan on capturing with Windows Movie Maker and import into VS. From all the comments and research I have found, this seems to be the best way to do this.
Thanks again.
Thanks again.

Of course the ADVC devices will work. They produce a DV stream just the same as a DV camcorder. I've been using one since they first came out and I'm delighted with it. I recommend none other.

Are you saying that Vista does not allow VS to copy DV files to HDD? I find that incredible.Ken Berry wrote:There could be an issue if you were using Vista and VS11/11.5 to capture. But since you plan to captue with Movie Maker, you will not have problems. (I use WinDV for capture of my DV footage...)

Sorry to come back to this, but I still don't understand. If VS will accept a DV stream from a cam, how come it won't accept an identical DV stream from a converter? I have an ADVC-100 and that works perfectly with 11.5+ (and MSP).
Are we talking at some cross-purposes here or am I just being thick?

Devil,
I don't know exactly why the capture plug-in (IVI) which was released with VS11, would not allow this analog>digital capture, however when it was first released, there were a scant few analog devices that VS would accept. After the patch was released, most all analog>digital converters were accepted. However there still may be some that VS will not allow. One being using an analog 8 tape in a digital-8 camcorder. It still refuses to allow this.
With all versions prior to VS11 the capture plug-in was the VFW/DSW. Intervideo (which had ate Ulead) changed it to their own IVI.

Sorry, did not know this. Have only recently obtained VS because I use MSP almost exclusively but I feel that the latter's antiquity may leave me standing
However, I'm surprised: as Gertrude Stein would say, I always thought DV was DV was DV was DV.
