TV Capture Crash

Post by deejay »

VideoStudio 11+ w/updates
Cable Tuner: Motorola DCT6416
Capture: Plextor ConvertX M402U

Trying to capture video from CATV source using S-video hook-up (from tuner). This same hookup works with other software. In VS11 when I click the first Capture Video button, video plays in preview window. When I click the second Capture Video button to begin capture, entire computer freezes. Cursor barely moves and I must use Ctrl Alt Del to get the Task Mgr screen to exit. Plenty of hard disk space. Any thoughts?

My first thought is what all do you have running on your PC when you're trying to capture? The capture process is the most demanding on your PC, so make sure you shutdown any and all processes that are not needed.

I close everything else but VS. Well I'm not too sure about processes.

The processes are what needs to be minimal. I have a video editing hardware profile, and only have about 25 processes running. My normal profile there are about 45 processes..

I found a nifty free program called Process Explorer at http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysi ... 96653.aspx that details all the processes running on my PC. By saying you have a profile, does that mean you have a method that closes all the processes you won't be using with one stroke when you get ready to start video editing? If so, how does one set that up?

Ok, I just tried stopping some of the larger processes I wasn't using. I still had about 44 processes running, most very small. My CPU usage under the Performance tab of Task Manager was running between 0 & 2%. When I opened VS and then clicked on the Capture Video button, the CPU Usage shot up to 100% and stayed there. That can't be correct.........right?

Steve (sjj1805) wrote a tutorial called Creating a Video Editing Profile, where he explains everything about how to go about creating one.

That is not uncommon for the CPU to run at 100% when capturing. That should demonstrate just how demanding it is on your PC.

If you don't want to create a video editing hardware profile there is a small free program called EnditAll2, that allows you to safely stop processes that is not needed. You can download it from the following link:

Okay, I've been working on this all day. I followed the directions in the Video Editing Profile tutorial. Results:

Before:
Processes: 50 CPU Usage: 0 - 2% PF Usage: 351mb

After:
Processes: 17 CPU Usage: 0% PF Usage: 114mb

By the way, I have 1gb memory. As before, everything comes to an abrupt halt when I click on the Capture Video button. I though it was because I was attempting to capture a program in HD but when I switched to a non-HD channel, same thing happened. VS completely stops responding. Any other ideas?
