.avi files crash

Post by leszektrojanowski »

Hi there,

I am sure there has been a threat about it, but I cannot find it.

Whenever I put .avi files into the timeline it either slows down movement on the timeline or it can actually turn the programme off completetly.

Can you advise me if there is anything I can do?

Thanks

There are many different types of avi files. Where did you get it from? Right click on it and post the properties here.

Just to be a little more precise, right click on one of the files *within* Video Studio -- either when the file is in the timeline or it's in the Library window.

Where did you get your "avi" file? The ffdshow codec that it uses is one that I don't have on my system. That codec is generally used for Xvid, DivX, and MPEG4 formats, which are very highly compressed. If so, then yes they are going to slow your PC down, down to a complete snail's crawl, unless you're running a super powerful PC...;)

I downloaded the file off the Internet.

So what codecs should I use then?

If it was done with the ffdshow codec, you need that codec to play it correctly -- so you need to download a program like GSpot or Sherlock to see if it is on your computer. At the very least, the XVid or DivX codec might do as a substitute. However, generally, you need the codec which encoded the file to play it back properly...
