Video Studio has encountered a problem and needs to close

Post by jarhead1936 »

Video Studio 11plus.

Installation was completed and Video Studio works to a point.
Click on Ulead Video Studio desktop Icon
Video Studio Editor
Capture
Capture Video = goes to encountered a problem message.
Technical information on the problem message:
C:\DOCUME~1\HP-ADM~1\LOCALS~1\Temp\9be_ASPPCOMPAT.TXT

My PC is a HP Z555 Media Center
I am attempting to capture analog video with Video Studio through the PC analog ports from a VHS VCR on port 1 and/or a 8MM VCR on port 2.

application Movie Maker is included with Media Center.
application WCreator is included with Video Studio 11.
Analog Video Capture and editiing works on both of these applciations.

I have installed and un-installed Video Studio 4 times. Each installation has the same problem error message.

There are no updates for Video Studio 11 plus that I could find that apply to this problem.

any help will be greatly appreciated!

OK... Use the software that works with your hardware and your files! Frequently, "random" capture-software and capture-hardware just doesn't work well together. Most of the time, the capture-software has to be custom written for the particular hardware & driver. (I use one application for analog capture, a 2nd for editing, and a 3rd for DVD authoring and burning!)

You didn't mention any editing problems or what file format you are editing, but some A/V file formats are "difficult" to edit and/or convert. The highly-compressed formats seem to cause quite a bit of trouble.

I guess I did not make myself clear enough.
I can not get past the "Capture Video" button not matter if I am trying to capture analog or digital.
One of the claims video studio makes is that "Capture Video & Photos", "VHS tapes or personal DVD's", PCs with TV tuner card or Personal Video Recorders"
I purchased Video Studio to copy and edit my home 8mm and vhs tapes to DVD.
My HP Media Center PC meets all of the requirements to use Video Studio.
And I find it unbelivable that I can not get any technical or support help from COREL.
Video Studio is worthless to me if I can not use it.
Guess its time to make a phone call and cancel my credit card charge.

What Doug is saying is if you can capture using Movie Maker or WCreator then do so. Then you can import those files into VS for editing and burning.

I understand what you two are trying to tell me - However

I should not be getting the message "Ulead video studio has encountered a problem and needs to close" and closes the application and asks if I want to notify microsoft"
This happens when I click on the "Capture Video" button. I do not even get the chance to select the analog and/or DV device.

AND yesterday I found out that when I click on the "Tools" tab and "Change Capture Plug In" option I get the same error message.
SOOOOO how can I edit video I can not capture???????????

And all of the manual and on line information and the product box claim this product WILL capture ANALOG video.

My HP PC has 3 separate individual Analog Input Ports.
All 3 have s-video and composite inputs.
None of the 3 inputs work on Video Studio.
All 3 inputs work on other Video Capture applications with the same VHS, 8MM VCR's And my 8MM Vidor Camera.

I purchase the box/cd version of Video Studion From Corel.

I still feel that something is wrong with the application and I should not get an error message telling me to I can send a notification of the error to microsoft.

When I received VS11 I tried to use analog video capture and was unable to. I found it puzzling because I was able to do so with VS9. It turns out that you can only capture through a fire wire cable. I had to install one of those IEEE 1394 capture cards in my PC to be able to capture footage digitally. They are as cheap as chips though ($20ish).

But I'm no expert, I could be wrong. Just wanted to add my two cents worth lol

If you're using a built in factory composite or S-video port for capturing try using the sofware that came with the computer. Mine came with Roxio and if I want to capture using either port that is what I use. Then as the others said, import that file into VS.

If you're using firewire and VS fails, use WMM.

Yep, I actually had to capture footage using VS9, then I'd import those files into VS11.

Just FYI, VS11 has problems capturing analog video. This is due to the changed capture plug-in. The update patch fixes most of the analog capture problems. There is still one method that was not fixed, and that is when placing a analog 8mm tape in a Digital 8 camcorder.

This is why you can capture without problems using earlier versions, the capture plug-in is different..

OK I am going to try to explain whats happening again.

Go to the Ulead video studio user guide on Page 43.
I have a paper copy of the guide. Also the User Guide in the application is the same page #43.

From page 43

Capture Video
To capture video:
1. Click the Capture Step then click Capture Video button. This is where the error message "Ulead Video Studio has encountered a problem and needs to close" and asks if I want to report the error to microsoft.

I cant get to step #2 Duration box because VS closes on step 1 and shuts down VS.

I cant get to step #3 Select your capture device from the SOURCE list becuse VS closed on step 1.

I cant get to steps 4 thru 9 for the same reason.

So even if I tried to capture from a DV camera or device I cant get that far becuse VS shuts down.

Something seems to be wrong with the application and/or my system that is the cause of the error message.

I have even gone so far as to use my system restore cd and restore the PC back to the factory settings. This removes all files, folders, applications, upgrades etc. And then I installed Video Studio as the only other non factory application on the pc. Get the same error message.

The patch for VS appears to be just for Intallation problems and a specific error. The patch does not address a problem where the installation is complete and all options work, except Capture.
I dont like to install patchs that are not for a paticular problem and this patch is not removeable.

Have you tried using Windows Movie Maker to capture? That's what I do, then I import the file to VS.

Have you updated your DirectX? That seems to cure a myriad of problems.

Jarhead1936,
No expert on the problems you are encountering, but don't give up on VS11 just yet. When I first loaded VS9 I ran into similar problems, poor quality of DVDs, captures didn't; capture, files just disappeared, and on and on, but over the few years I have worked with this produced it has proven to be reliable and easy to use. One of the best things or tips I got from this site was to separate the program from the video files by loading VS on the C: drive and the video files on a second hard drive. Just got a new HD camera so I'm; sure I'll be back here looking for advice.

Corel Tech Support

Post by jarhead1936 »

At last I managed to speak to a LIVE Corel Tech Support Person.

First I received a reply from Corel's on line tech support about the error message. The tech reviewed my problem and suggested I contact Corel LIVE tech support.

Today I was patient enough to wait on hold (over 10 min.) and reached a live tech.
He believes the HP Z555 media center analog ports do not include drivers for VS11.
Here is his fix for the error message problem.
1. Download Ulead VS11 Update and test capture. Get same errormessage.
2. Download Ulead VS11 Patch and test capture. Get same error message.
3. Live with the problem and use the Video Application that was provided with the PC to capture and then import video to VS11.

Oh by the way, Corel/Ulead LIVE tech support is FEE based, even if the product is brand new out of the box. So if the Update and Patch did not fix the problem and I wanted to continue any further then the three above steps with tech support I would have to pay the fee.

I guess everybody on the forum was trying to tell me the same thing, Capture with another application and import to VS11 . Only I am to stuborn to listen. I had to chase after this until I found out what and why.

New topic will be to find out why vs11 wont play the imported audio.
Still need to do some testing on that problem
