security error with videostudio

Post by gstockton »

I want to tell you how very upset and disappointed I am with this product. After running a registry cleanup program on my machine I started getting an error stating the security information was invalid and now Ulead VideoStudio will not run. I manually uninstalled VideoStudio, the software that I paid for less than 6 months ago. Then did a fresh install and it still will not run. After two hours trying to fix my problem I read on the forums that if I have downloaded a Trial version, and Activated it, then adjusted my registry as I did that this security error will happen.

I think it is unconscionable for a company to distribute software that does this, or at minimum not have information posted on your web site that allows paying customers like myself to have a work-around so we get what we paid for. Corel, I demand a refund for this worthless piece of software.

I think it's unconscionable for a person to run a registry cleaner improperly and then complain because their software doesn;t work but instead of using the back-up of the registry they call the software worthless?

What makes you think I ran my registry cleaner improperly? Clevo? There are many programs of this kind on the market, how does one run a registry cleaner improperly? Explain?

I did backup my registry beforehand and tried to restore, this does not work or correct the problem. Restore points do not work either. Manually uninstalling, which on any other software program would seem logical, for this worthless piece of software, did not work.

Yeah, that was a really ignorant flip comment on your part Clevo.

Just by going from your information VS stopped working properly after running a Registry Cleaner...seems to me logical that your Registry Cleaner told you to delete something and you deleted it without checking what that registry line actually does.

While there are 100's of Registry cleaners, they all come with WARNINGS and require you to back up your systems and NONE of them are 100% perfect.

Now..if you want help, because No-one here works for Corel, then by all means give us some details to work with.

Are you sure your registry cleaner cannot restore the Registry?

OK, to avoid a catfight here, I agree with gstockton about his complaint. I run a couple of registry clean-up programs on a regular basis and just use their default settings. Never had a problem.

And Clevo, we know that the trial version of VS causes problems if it is then activated. Too many users have complained. So gstockton indeed has a point.

The problem, though, gstockton, is that this Board is run by volunteer users who have absolutely no connection at all with Corel/Ulead. So we have no influence over the product. In fact, there have been numerous posts, as you have found, that indicate a problem with the trial version. But there is nothing more that we, on this Board, can do... So use this Board for venting, as you have done, but don't expect that anyone from Corel is suddenly going to intervene to correct the situation. Sorry...

This was the product I used
http://www.liutilities.com/products/registrybooster/

UniBlue Registry Booster - $29, don't buy it.

It does not offer any option to approve/disapprove registry edits apparently. Yes, probably quite foolish of me to trust a program like this.

What I find upsetting is Corel has something embedded in their trial versions that does not simply allow the user to do a fresh install and verify our paid activation code. If you want to offer trial versions, fine, but don't screw us when we need to re-activate a paid trial. Also their web site seems so utterly non-friendly in terms of being able to even submit a tech support request. All I saw was KnowledgeBase article after article after article, but no place to simply send in an issue resolution request.

I think the best solution for me is to cut my losses with Corel and look at a different vendor's product, and buy the CD and not a trial.

Over.. and out.

I don't think Corel ar out to screw anybody. And I agree their website isn't very userfriendly, and it seems hard to get help directly from Corel.

But...there is this forum

Issue resolutions are done here...by volunteers.

There is a possibility, but not guaranteed.

Uninstall all your Ulead applications

Search the whole computer for ulead and, separately, videostudio and VSnn where nn is your 9, 10 or 11, as the case may be and delete everything.

Then download the free Registrar Lite. This is a somewhat sophisticated registry editor but, unlike Regedit, it has a decent search function. Back up your registry. Search the whole registry for VideoStudio and it will list all the keys and values. Select them all and delete them completely. Then do the same for ulead. You will risk nothing by doing this. Now for the tricky part. Do the same for VS but go through the list manually and delete lines which seem to have something to do with the application. IF IN DOUBT, DO NOT DELETE!!!

Then try reinstalling your Ulead applications.

Alternatively, there is a surefire way: reinstall Windows as a dual boot and use VideoStudio in that; this is very good practice, anyway, if you have a dedicated boot for video work.

Any good registry cleaning program tells you, or has you backup the registry prior to making changes.
In other words you should be able to reverse the changes.
See if the program has this capability, you still may be able to restore the changes.
