Unable to Capture Video Via Firewire

Post by KeithC »

After using VS11+ to edit and share videos from an RCA Small Wonder, I've upgraded to a new Canon ZR930 (miniDV). It uses Firewire and my computer has the Dell Multimedia bay with one FW connection and a card in the back of the computer with two additional FW ports (not used for anything else).

Problem is ... when I connect my camera via FW to any of the three ports and then load VS and try to capture video from the camera, VS tells me there is either no video capture driver installed OR no device is connected.

(By-the-way, when connected, my Logitech Webcam 9000Pro shows up just fine as a capture choice in VS, but I've unplugged it (USB) to avoid conflict with the miniDV)

I've done the following based on this forum's recommendations:

- Made sure Windows FireWall was off
- Checked Control Panel for proper workings of the 1394 Connections.
- No other FW device is connected
- Downloaded KB885222 and and KB904412 from MS (addresses this problem)
- VS is all updated
- ALL windows updates applied (hardware and software)

I believe that I've done all the basic things, but I've never capture video in this way before. The MiniDV camera (ZR930) is on and in PLAY (also tried RECORD mode).

All help would be appreciated.

Hi Keith,

sorry to hear of your troubles. It sounds like the firewire connection should work on your pc, since you've downloaded the patches.

Ordinarily, when you connect your camcorder by firewire, and then turn it on (to "play") your pc should give you a pop-up message from the system tray. It normally says that it has detected whatever model of camcorder you're using, and gives you a prompt as to what you want to do.

I would suggest you try to capture video using Windows Moviemaker, which is an integral part of XP - and it should appear as one of the prompts.

If you are able to do that, it would suggest something wrong with your VS install.

If you can't capture with Moviemaker, it would point to a pc configuration problem.

You also need to consider the possibility of a bad firewire cable - unlikely, but possible.
