Jerky playback when I compress mpeg

Post by StewartTurner »

Hello.

I am sure that I have managed this before without problems but can't manage to work it out this time.
I've got a 120 minute video rendered to mpg at abou 9100 kbps. I would like to reduce the bitrate so that I can fit it onto a single layer DVD so I used UVS10+ to convert to 6500kbps. Unfortunately the resulting video is jerky, stuttering all the way through (audio is fine but goes out of sync). I retained all other details, making sure field order was fine etc.

It's a simple thing to do and I'm sure I've done it successfully before - can anyone advise what might be going wrong this time?

Thanks,
Stewart.

Hi Stewart

I assume the quality of the original is ok.
I would also assume that the settings have changed after render., Probably the field order?

I would use the Make Movie Manager to create a template.
Use the Add function and select your original file as the ¡¥file path¡¦

Then edit the template changing only the Bit rate to 6000kbps

Now start a new project, insert the original video clip

Share Create Video File ¡V selecting your template.

You will now render using the same settings except for the bit rate.

I have some notes here on Movie Manager

An alternative approach you might consider would be to produce DVD folders from the 9100kbps mpeg2 file, and then use DVD Shrink to make them fit a single layer DVD.

Some posters claim this results in a better quality final DVD than you would get from re-encoding to a lower bitrate in VS. I've been meaning to do some tests to check this out myself.

Thanks very much for the advice - I used some of the advise and started a completely new project for re-rendering. It seemed to work fine this time. I'm not sure exactly what went wrong before but all seems fine now.

Thanks again,
Stewart
