import video file formats and codecs

I'm wanting to create video using mencoder and then import that into ULead VS11 for merging with other sources and further editing. What file format and codec will give me the best results?

Ideally I would like to use something that compresses well (the particular video being generated lends itself to compression) but that is lossless. So I'm no fan of libdv at this point.
