Hi,
When I render a video and bring up task Manager, it shows cpu usage as 50% to 65%, both cores appear to be used - but why won't vs11 use 100% of both cpu cores to process the video - then I wouldn't have to wait so long for it to finish.
VS11 plus vista and cpu allocation on dual core

Hi dadio,
you could do a search and find a similar question posed fairly recently.
When encoding MiniDV avi to mpeg2, you will only see the percentages you mention - around 55% to 65%.
If you encode to H.264, you may see much higher values.
The cpu utilisation could be higher - but I don't think you could assume that encoding would be 50% faster if you saw 100% instead of 67%. I'm not sure that encoding speed scales like that - although it generally scales directly with cpu speed for any given cpu.
If you want to look for an up side to this deficiency in VS, it is that you can do other work while you have VS encoding in the background.

cpu allocation
Thanks for that, I did try a search under the above, but I guess I should have tried "rendering speed" or some such.
Anyway, any idea why? It's funny I used to use Cyberlink (not enough Dsc rendering options though). I tried it on this and it did use 100% cpu same for same footage and render stats. BUT took 2min 30secs for 1min vid, whereas VS11 plus took 1min 20secs (using less CPU).
so go figure - it's all too hard!
do you know any tweaks to make vs11 use more cpu.

Re: cpu allocation
Unfortunately, I believe the speed benefit of a dedicated video editing profile applies mainly to single core, non-hyperthreading cpu's, based on tests I've done with a Celeron M, Sempron, P4 2.8c and a C2D pc.sjj1805 wrote:Yesdadio wrote:.......do you know any tweaks to make vs11 use more cpu.
Mind you, my default profiles only used about 30 services, so there might still be a small benefit if your pc is in it's manufacturer's default condition, larded up with all manner of fluff. I've seen laptops with over 70 services running.
I still believe in the usefulness of a dedicated hardware profile, since it probably improves stability.
If you're a Vista user, you no longer have the option to set up different hardware profiles.

Looks like there's much improved dual core and multi-core support in the upcoming VS12!
I wonder if Corel will issue a patch for poor old VS11 users, or just hope to keep us on that merry upgrade treadmill.....
