Black line on left and bottom of captured DV video.

Post by no99741 »

When I capture video from my Samsung DigitalCam SC-D371 MiniDV camera I always get a black stripe along left and bottom sides. Does any one know why this happens. I tried capturing in Windows Movie Maker and same thing happens.

When the video is captured it claims to be 720 by 480 and 4:3 aspect ratio. I am confused here since 720 does not relate to 480 as 4 does to 3. Am I missing something here? Is this part of the problem?

Welcome to the forums,

Without any information on your System, I'm going to guess that it just has to do with the screen resolution of your monitor.

Please complete your System Information in your profile. Clicking on this button -->Image will take you to a short tutorial, explaining how to find and complete that information. This way it will always be available, and will save you from retyping it in the future.

Sounds like an IQ test question!
Actually 720 is to 480 as 4 is to 3 if the pixels are not squares but little rectangles...which they are.

This is normal and is a function of the camera. I have 2 DV cams. On the older one, I have thin black lines L & R, about the same width. On the other, it is similar, except the LH line is thicker and the RH one is thinner. I surmise that the optics of the cam are masked to give a sharp edge. They are of no consequence because they always fall in the overscan areas of TV sets, so are never seen when viewing on a TV.

I added the info. I use external monitor with my laptop (Dell 20" - 1600x1200).

This confuses me a lot. Coming from photo and monitor background I always thought of a pixel as a square. Now it seems that it is not.

I guess this makes sense as to how my camera can also do 16:9. It records the same amount of pixels, but the images is meant to be stretched wider than 4:3. Confuses me, but I see the logic. Am I making sense?
