VS11 - unspecified error

Post by VX2100E »

Putting in practice a project in VS11+, neither creating disc, DVD folders or disc image, I get the error after 99% completed during the job finalizing VOB. The message is "Unspecified error, [5:0:0]. I tryed several settings, external HDD. I use a Sony notebook AR61ZU with 2x250GB in RAID, 4GB of RAM, Intel Core Duo 2.4MHz with Windows Vista Ultimate. Trying the same job on a notebook with IDE HDD it works but slower (round 5 hours of compute for 1:39:17 of movie at GQ DVD 4:3.
I tryed to use working folder on external HDD. Only once it works for another 1:30:00 movie job.
What could be the reason?

First of all, make sure you have installed all patches and updates. The hotfix is only for people having trouble installing VS11, so should not apply to you. Install the 27MB patch before the 55MB Power Pack.

Hotfix, Update and Power Pack

Next make sure you have installed the latest DirectX. Even if you believe you already have 9.0c, it could be an earlier version.

Latest DirectX

Many users are able to avoid the kind of problem you describe by splitting the disc creation process into separate stages. See this comprehensive thread by SJJ1805

You mention the use of an external hard drive, but show 2 x 250GB hard drives in RAID. I presume you are not using a combination of an internal and an external hard drive in a RAID configuration. That would be a little unusual.

Nice laptop though!

It is very poor practice to use external HDDs for video work. I always recommend internal ones (SATA or ATA) for working files, and these can be copied or transferred to the external disk when you have finished. There are many reasons why working live with an external one can give errors.

I have read somwhere that working with video files it is recommended to use different partition than primary as work partition. Better, different drive.

I agree, but an internal SATA/IDE ATA drive.

I did suggested updates, the patch and the Power Pack, also the latest DirectX.
When I want to create a DVD, push the button Create Disc, choose the DVD, in the opened window create chapters, next, chose menu template and edit, the movie is theoretically ready (with the remote in preview window) but pushing now NEXT, VS11+ crash down. I have tryed several times, even opened the sample project suggested by Ulead.

Right, now that you've done the updates and DirectX, that rules out a few things.

Next thing to do is to try using the Suggested Workflow by SJJ1805

Can you expand on that statement? I capture my clips to an external and I never have any problems.

I unistalled VS11 and reinstall back. Following the Jeff's workflow now I can go up to the Burn level. After round 1 hour and a half the message is displayed: "File or folder not found"; [533:-2147216501:0]

Not exactly sure what you mean, so perhaps you could say which of these numbered steps you are able to do, and exactly when you get the problem.

1) Create a single large DVD compatible mpeg2 file from your main project.

2) Add that to a new blank project at the "Create Disc" step and create all your DVD menus.

3) Output that project to either DVD folders or an ISO file.

4) Burn ISO file or DVD folders created in 3) using either Video Studios own disc image recorder or your favourite burning software, eg Nero, Roxio, Imgburn etc.

The problem occures in the stage 3, (when are available 3 options to finalize the project: burning DVD, create DVD folders or create image of DVD). I have tryed 2 of these options, creating DVD folders (audiots and videots) and create disc image.
Right now I have finished to do the same job with the same project and files onto another computer with XP SP2 and there it works completely successfuly.

Another information. When I try to create a movie from the same project, it has been rendered an finished without errors. The error I mentioned occured only when I try to creade DVD folders from the project or even from the movie created before.

Hmm. Did you apply the updates and the latest DirectX to the laptop?

What exactly do you mean by "movie"? Do you mean a single large mpeg2 file or something different?

Many problems in the create disc step relate to the DirectX version. Can you type "Run" and then type in "Cmd" to open a dos window, then type "Dxdiag". In the resulting "DirectX Diagnostic Tool" window that pops up, you should see the DirectX version as 9.0c (4.09.0000.0904) for the XP SP2 pc and maybe something different for the Vista laptop. Hopefully a Vista user can chip in and tell us what it should show.

Yes, I have applied the latest DirectX, and dxdiag shows that DirectX 10 installed.
By movie I meaning the mpeg2 format, already rendered.
I have tryed again the same workflow but the target was an external HDD, connected via USB. It works. The DVD folders was created. But to be honest (myself) that isn't the right solution.
Another job has finished with the error message: Failed to create VOB folder; [515:0:0]. I am very confused...
