Newbie questions regarding functionality

Post by wonhead »

I have several questions regarding working in Video Studio. I’ve made the switch from Pinnacle Studio because of oos problems, and I’m wondering if I have to give up some of that product’s functionality, or if there is a way to get that functionality that I am just missing.

1)Pan & Zoom – “Set Start to same as End of last clip” . This feature lets you create multiple segments with pan and zoom that looks like you are moving all over the picture, by having the start of the next clip be exactly same size and in the same position as the end of the previous clip. I thought maybe there would be some numbers representing the position and size somewhere that I could copy and use on the next clip, but I don’t see anything like this. Does anyone know how to duplicate this functionality in this tool?

2) Video filter – I shot some footage outside as it was getting dark and it’s blue because I did not re white balance. Which video filter do I use to remove some of the blue? I tried several but had no luck.

3) When I change the video track, all my overlays, music, titles, and sound clips are repositioned relative to my video – in other words, they’re in the wrong place. In the pinnacle tool, the default is that this does NOT happen – since 99% of the time, you’ve put them where you have because they go with the video, but you can change it for your project. I guess the default is the opposite in this project. I don’t mind changing it each time, but I can’t seem to find where to do that and it’s getting pretty annoying. I’ve tried just waiting to the end to go back and add stuff to the other tracks, but it just makes no sense to me to work that way.

4) When I make a cut, and then hit play to see where my next cut will be, it turns out the cursor has jumped to the start of the previous clip, so I am constantly having to move it to where I just made the cut and hit play again. Is there a way to leave the cursor where it was and not have it jump around so much? In the other tool, the cursor stays where ever you've placed it, unless you move it or hit play or one of the other movement controls (i.e. frame advance, fast forward, etc.)

5) How do I change the default size for the overlay track? Right now it is not full screen. Most of the time I use it for a cut-away, which means it should be full-screen.

6) Is there a way to copy and past directly into the timeline? I don’t need to create a bunch of separate clips in the album I just want to copy a clip to another area of the timeline.

If you have to click “copy”, then the edit menu, then click “paste”, then drag the clip from the album to the timeline, there must be SOME where else you can paste it. Otherwise there would be one command called “copy to album”, right? So is there maybe some way to paste to the timeline, or no?

7) If I go back to two clips that I created by clipping one clip but would now like to treat as one clip again, is there an option to combine the clips? I’ve sort of gotten used to that functionality, but don’t know if this tool provides it. Obviously I'm talking about after I've made other changes, so that using the "undo" feature is not a viable solution.

8) I make a cut and add a transition. Then I hit play (move the cursor to where it should be) and determine my next cut. When I try to make the cut, I get a message saying, would I like to remove the transition I just added. If I say ‘no’ (why would I want to remove it when I just added it) then the tool just ignores my request to do the cut. If I say “yes” I’m constantly going back and adding the transition again. This one I’m sure is something I’m doing wrong, or something caused by a wrong setting somewhere. Could some one tell me what I’m doing wrong? Needless to say, this is not how it works in the other tool. I could understand it, if I was trying to do a cut right where the transition was or even if it was real close to the transition, but it happens no matter how far along the time line I am from the transition.

9) I like the album transitions. I’d like to start with the closed album and have it open to the first page, then use one of the “flip” transitions to show some pictures. How do I show the album open up to begin things. Has anyone figured out how to do this?

10) How do I get the cursor to move in the timeline when I hit play and the clip is selected? The scissor icon is active, so I can do a cut, but the cursor does not move.

11) Regarding multiple titles coming on to the same screen, do they all have to start at the same time or is there a way to have one come on (and stay on) and have the next one start either after the first
begins coming on or after the first is all the way on?

12) How do a make a dvd with only one menu. Every time I’ve tried I end up with two, a main menu and a submenu. I have one video that I load to the tool. I want to have one menu with 4 chapters. The first is the first frame of the video and the others are within the video. No matter what I’ve tried, I end up with a main menu that has one link to a submenu, where my actual chapter links are.

13) When I click the Play button, there is a 1 to 8 second delay before the cursor starts to move. When I have a very short amount of video on the time line, there is hardly any delay. Once I add more video, say a 20 minute clip, then even if all I’m doing is playing that exact same tiny clip, at the beginning of the timeline, there’s an 8 second delay before it starts playing. I have 3.8 gig processor and ½ gig ram. I have “instant” playback selected.

Thanks for your help in answering any or all of the above questions.

Wow - a few questions! Maybe between us we can sort them out..

3] VS9 has fixed this annoying "feature". It has ripple editing, so everything stays in the right place.

6] Try "Insert Video File" - the little folder icon at the bottom left of the screen. You can just load in a file from anywhere. (I assume you have VS8??)

8] I have had this sometimes. I think the clips are tied to the transitions - if you are messing with a clip, the neighbouring transition will be affected. I just got into the habit of doing transitions last.

10] Another problem solved with version 9. The cursor travels through the timeline while playing - even in storyboard mode. Very nice.

12] The only way to have a one-page menu is to render the four chapters individually as separate video files. Then when you are creating a DVD, add them sequentially, so you get four buttons (indicating four projects) on the main page. I believe you can set it up to play them all rather than returning to the menu after each one.

13] Most of us have some sort of a pause before "instant playback". What you are asking the computer to do at this point is to quickly assemble all the data from many widely scattered files and run it all simultaneously (without combining it into one file), not necessarily at top quality, just so that you can have an idea what the final result will be. The more sources you are drawing from (multiple clips, overlays, effects, music, voiceovers etc) the harder it will be to do. I don't think mine takes 8 seconds, but I must confess I've never timed it..

That's it for me; hope others can help out with the rest.

on Question #2 Filter...in Video Studio 9 there is a feature for color correction that might be able to help. It is located in the "Overlay" tab and the sub-tab "Edit". In the Edit sub tab there is a color correction icon, click on that and experiment with it.

Ron and "joosuna",

Thanks for taking the time to respond to some of my questions. Anyone else?

#2 I did not see anything specific to the Overlay step on the Edit tab. I did take another look though and found the Color Balance filter. Not sure why I did not notice it before. This is what I needed.

#3 was probably the most important. I'm glad to know vs9 will allow the other tracks to stay where you want them to, relative to the video track.

#6 I was asking about right-clicking a clip in the timeline and then pasting it directly on the timeline. The icon you mentioned, opens up a file browser, for finding existing files - unless I'm missing something? Not a big deal though to paste to the album then drag it to the timeline. Just wondered if I have to do it that way.

#8 To bad performing a cut causes transistions to be deleted. Maybe VS10 will address this.

#10 I'll be getting version 9.

#12 For now, I'll probably use the other tool to burn my DVDs.

#13 OK, so "instant" playback is not allways instant. I checked out the "multi-trim video" feature. I tried it on an hour long avi file. The instant I click play, the video begins. I tried it in the middle and near the end of the clip with the same result. So then I went back to the timeline and realized I get the same result but only when "clip" is selected, and not "project". Even though the cursor does not move when you hit play, I realized I could still make a cut. Of course once I do that, the cursor jumps back to the start of the orginal clip, so then I quickly slect the remaining part of the video and click paly again. I guess this will work. The Multi-trim feature works too (no delay in playing) but the window is so much smaller.

Thanks again for responding.

It's really interesting to hear in detail from someone who's been using another video editing software and who seriously wants to know about ours.

Over and over, as I read through wonhead's questions, I found myself asking "Yeah, WHY is that?" at the same time realizing that I'd accommodated myself to UVS and no longer asked myself why.

Unless I'm very much mistaken, I would have the same number of questions about Pinnacle or Sony Studio if I changed and went over to them. But they'd probably be different questions.

I think the programmers who created these programs are hard workers with the serious purpose of producing something excellent. But they're not geniuses. If they were, they'd have realized how essential the 'ripple effect' is and included it -- and many other features -- long ago. The software would be more intuitive; as it is, we need that 'first post' with all the 'Recommended Procedures.' And the Owner's Manual wouldn't just tell you what each feature does. It would take you, step by step, through the entire creation process the way Jerry Jones' tutorial does, but with lots of subsections to cover the different options and their effects and why you might want them.

Plus, I guess they never consider rewriting the entire thing. There's a huge amount of inertia that keeps programmers from tossing out the old and starting over from scratch. As in much else in life.
