No sound issue

Post by robertnp »

:( Hi,
I have had a very very frustrating afternoon. My vs10+ full version is not playing any sound from movies off my disk. It used to work. I have uninstalled it and re-installed it.

Since it last worked, I have installed Skype and a LogiTech camera. I have unistalled the camera. Movies are playing fine in WMP and VLC. Just no sound in VS. I can record voice into VS and it plays back fine. But no sound from the movies.

Been allover the system, checked Sound settings, Hardware profile, mute settings within VS10+. All files working fine outside VS10+. Been through the forums and the Knowledge base.

I have tried movies from my Sony Handycam and MPGs that are on my PC.

XP-SP2, 1 Gb RAM. Acer Aspire 1800.

What should I try next?

Thanks
Rob

:( :( Hi,

Since the last post, I have installed UVS11+ -- still nothing. I have checked the audio codecs, and they are there.

Does anybody have any ideas for this please?

Thank you .

:? HI,

Since the last post I have loaded the Magix editer, and it is working, so the problem lies in some dopey configuration setting somewhere in relation to VS.

Does anyone have any suggestions? I have been at this since 2pm today. It is now 1030pm. I think I have just about had enough.

It shouldn't have to be this hard to find out why something is not working -- especially when the competior products works just fine.

Thank you.

:D Hi,

This problem is now resolved.

I installed the software on my office portable (Toshiba Satellite M90) and the same problem is present. The most likely common culprits to both PCs were the SLD codec pack and the K-Lite codec pack. As I was pressed for time at work, I deleted the SLD pack and used the codec manager in K-lite to inhibt all the K-lite codecs.

When I tried to uninstall the SLD pack, it told me that the iac25_32.ax and 3cdeco.acm were in use by other programs. I found the following command to deregister the iac codec:

regsvr32 - u iac25_32.ax

I ran UVS11 and it worked fine!!

When I got home, I uninstalled the SLD codec pack from my home portable (Acer Aspire 1800), and the UVS11 works fine again!!!

Interestingly the unistall did not report any codecs in use. So that, in itself was not the problem. The iac driver is an Intel audio codec and a bit of internet search shows it has been implicated in some other DVD editng software problems, so that may have been the problem.

What a PITA!! But at least it is all back in action.

The lesson learned here is that if you haven't used your movie editing software for some time, (12 months, to tthe day for me), it is easy to forget just what you have installed over the previous period. However anything that installs codecs has to be primary suspect(s) -- especialy when one program works but its direct competitor does not.

What the last point shows is that some programs use the common codecs on the system (have a look at Windows Media Maker > Tools > Options > Compatibility to see a list that is used by WMM and note that you can inhibt them one at a time if you are having problems.) Other programs either use different codecs or come wtih their own, to ensure they control their own quality or whatever.

Hope all that helps someone else one day.

Bye

Rob.

These codec packs are notorious for causing problems with all NLE applications. They are often close to virus packs or, at the least, a scam. If you do a search, you will find a number of messages on various boards stating that it is not recommended to install them. The problem is that they often contain prehistoric codecs that interfere with the working of modern ones. This can apply to both video and audio codecs.

Just to expand a bit on Devil's absolutely correct comment, those mega codec packs are a nightmare. They are usually thrown together with quantity, rather than quality, being the *only* important factor. They will often contain not only old codecs, but ones which actively undercut the operation of more maintstream codecs.

I personally admit to having used them, but from the start, I think I used them in a responsible way. If I needed a specific codec or codecs, then I would go to the mega codec pack installer program, identify and select the codecs I was after in the list of codecs contained in the pack, and tick only them. This is a pain since usually ALL the codecs are ticked and you usually have to untick just about everything manually if you want only one or two. But that way I get *just* my codec and no associated hassles that way!!!
