Help w/VS9 crashes

Post by Bill »

First thanks to those who helped me get this logon. I guess I
couldn't figure it out by myself.

Problem: Videostudio 9 (VS9) crashes when I try to burn a DVD.

It used to work fine but then I started getting error messages which
were to be sent to Microsoft. Reinstalled (both ways) VS9 to no
avail. Finally, I reformatted my hard disk and reinstalled all of
my programs including VS9. Everything works fine except for VS9.
When trying to burn a DVD the program goes thru part of the
process (about 3-4% total) and crashes. By crash, I mean VS9
just goes away leaving the standard Windows display. Like I
said earlier though, when first installed, VS9 worked fine including
burning DVDs.

For what it is worth, I have a Gateway computer with 1M RAM
and 200G hard disk (about 140G available) and am running
Windows XP.

It used to work fine...
There may be a problem with this particular video file. What format is your original file and where did it come from? Are you editing the file? Is it possible to re-capture it to a different format?

FYI - The highly-compressed formats are trouble-prone. (It's not unusual for a file to play-back fine, but cause trouble when you try to edit or convert it.)

Hi Bill

You don¡¦t give any information of the workflow you are following.
Nor do you say what the project properties or the video file properties are?

Are you creating a video file from your project, then using the file to burn your dvd.
Or are you trying to burn a dvd from the project?

After installing VS 9 have you applied the patch to fix/update the program??????
I am not sure what the patch fixed, its been quite some time since it was released.
But its worth doing.

I'm not exactly sure what you mean by format. I believe the file has
a ".VSP" extension if that is what you mean. I didn't have trouble
editing it, just burning it to DVD.

Hi Bill,
If you are trying to burn a VSP file you are asking for trouble. That is a Video Studio Project file. It's not much more than a :notepad" file with instruction to the program as to where things are and what you want to do with those things. If you go to this link and read through you will see the more advisable workflow to minimise probelms like this.

More

Here's the answers to a couple questions above.

My camcorder is analog and I captured the movie thru
DVDXpressDX2 device. The resulting file has a MPG
extension.

My workiing file has a VSP extension.

The output format is DVD.

I don't understand the comment about compression. Can
you elaborate?

Trevor - what do you mean by "the patch to fix/update

Bill you do need to read through the information provided in the links supplied by sjj1805 and lancecarr.

Compression is just that. Files are compressed to reduce the size of the file. To do this there are CODECs, (COmpression DECompression). These are special programming utilities that use various algorithms. For video files, these CODECS include DV, MPEG, DivX, Xvid, AVCHD, and so on. Some of these compression schemes create files that are very highly compressed. The more compressed the greater the difficulty in editing.

Since you're capturing analog video, and using MPEG-2 CODEC, stick with that video file format. DVD specs for Standard DVDs require the video file to be MPEG-2.

If you read and follow the Suggested Workflow, it will minimize the possibility of problems.

The upgrade/patches are found on Ulead's website. If you have not installed them you need to. Just click on the following link to go to the Update page: http://www.ulead.com/tech/vs/vs_ftp_90.htm

Still need help

Post by Bill »

I'm still having the same problem. Crashes. While I appreciate the
links that you folks have sent me, it's not easy reading for an old
novice like me. Those tutorials are not written in language easily
understood by me.

Can we start over and take itty, bitty steps?

First I want to recapture data. I am playing a VHS tape on a
VHS player/recorder. The output of the VHS player is the input
to my DVDExpressDX2 device. I think that is really an analog-
to-digital converter. This produces a file in my computer. If
I recall correctly that file has an MP3 extension. Is there anything
I need to do in particular to get this far?

Ok Bill

Lets start again.
This is what you said in your first post

'Problem: Videostudio 9 (VS9) crashes when I try to burn a DVD.

It used to work fine but then..................

You have re-installed VS 9.

Did you install the relevent patches for VS 9 ?????????????

As the program used to work i will assume you are able to capture.
Please capture a short test clip.
What are the propertiers of the captured file????????????????

PS where is MD :?: , i am asking as your location reflects your video properties.

Trevor,

MD would probably be Maryland, here in the U.S.

Patches

Post by Bill »

I installed three or four patches from the Ulead web site.
MD is indeed Maryland.
I'll try a short capture, edit and burn tomorrow morning.

Thanks again and I hope I'm not becoming a "pain".

Sorta works

Post by Bill »

As requested yesterday, I tried to burn a short DVD. It worked.
I burned a two minute and 20 second movie onto a DVD. Played
back fine. Then I immediately tried burning a full length DVD
(my original project). It crashed. What do I do now? Is there
some sort of buffer setting that is set too short? Please
remember, much earlier on I was burning full length (say 1
hour 30 minute) DVDs.
