My First DVD with VS11+...having a Problem Burning?

Post by gebirgsjager »

I have spent the last 2 months getting to know the software and working out the little bugs (like losing my video filters). Everything I didn't know how to do I eventually figured out.

I am now at the SHARE stage, and again I have taken the time to create a nice DVD menu. Everything has gone smoothly...until I hit BURN.

I get a pop up that says

"Total size is larger than the total project. You can
1) press (yes) to try to fit DVD
2) press (no) to go back and change project or re-select clips"

I'm not really sure what this means? I tried to fit the DVD, and I got everything but the last 20 seconds of audio!

My film is an hour and 12 minutes long. The required hard disk and disk space is WAY above what is required, as per the info on the menu. I am using 240 minute DL DVD's.

There is a little bar at the bottom of the menu that is green on the left and says (2.45 GB). There is a small yellow portion after that. And on the right there is a red bar that reads (1.40 GB). Sorry for the lack of a screen shot. I am assuming the portion in Red is the problem. I just don't undertsand the solution.

Could somebody please help me understand what is going on? I'm sure this is easy, I just don't get it? When it says in the pop up window I can go back and change project....does that mean VS11+ is incapable of creating a project over an hour? And what does "re-select clips" mean?
And when it says "Total Size" is larger than the "Total Project," what is it refering to?

Thanks in advance.

Please read and comply with the PLEASE READ THIS BEFORE POSTING thread. Then tell us EXACTLY what you are doing, where your video source is, the VS settings/properties, the MPEG-2 settings, the project size etc. We cannot guess what you are doing.

Hi Blair,

hope that you're getting along a bit better with VS now!

You should help us to help you by filling in the pc related stuff in your forum user profile - and it will save you time in the long run, not having to repeat info.

I suggest you first check this extensive post by sjj1805. The suggested workflow splits the DVD creation process, avoiding problems experienced by some users.

Suggested Workflow by sjj1805

The next thing I would suggest would be to output the "Create Disc" step to DVD folders or an ISO file. You can then burn the folders or ISO file separately to a disc. Breaking the operation down in that way prevents you losing all the time spent if something goes wrong in the disc authoring step.

Hope you're burning to Verbatim DL discs - there aren't too many reliable discs available.

Now my best guess as to the cause of your specific problem would be that you have a single layer disc selected in the "Create Disc" step.

Click on "Share > Create Disc > DVD" and in the resulting window that appears, look to the bottom left corner. The default will likely be "DVD 4.7 G". Click on the down arrow and change it to "DVD 8.5G".

Good luck!

P.S. For a 72 minute project, if you use compressed audio and 8000 kbps variable bitrate video, you should be able to fit it onto a single layer DVD.

Thanks 2Dogs and Devil.

Sorry about that, Devil. I'm new to this forum. I'll do as you said. I've had to post very little on this forum precisely because I have been able to figure things out on my own by doing just what the Read This First post says.

I thought maybe this would be a quick fix. Not sure why I assumed that. My mistake.

2Dogs, thanks for the tips. I'll try those tonight, and get back tomorrow with my info and more specifics.

Best,
Blair

2Dogs,

Just an update. The problem was exactly what you said, and was indeed a quick fix that I was hoping for. I simply had to change it to 8.5.

Best,
Blair
